The MTC Hafren Ultra

The MTC Hafren Ultra is a point-to-point ultra marathon and forms Day 1 of the MTC Severn Challenge. The course covers 27 miles with approximately 872 m of ascent and 1,069 m of descent. It is listed as the 10th edition and records include a course best of 3:59:00.

The route begins with a near four mile mountain trek up Plynlimon to the source of the River Severn, an area noted for concealed bogs where competitors are advised to keep to designated routes. From the source the route follows the river path back toward Rhyd-y-benwch and continues to the finish at Mid Wales Arts Centre. The initial section includes a reported altitude drop of about 1,600 ft.

The race is point-to-point; competitors are responsible for their own travel to the start and from the finish. The organisers recommend using provided GPX files for navigation because parts of the Severn Path can be overgrown and many routes are unsigned.

There are two official checkpoints. Checkpoint catering offers vegan and gluten-free options when selected at entry, or competitors may supply labelled food bags for specific checkpoints. Events operate cup-free; competitors should bring a reusable cup. All finishers receive a bespoke Hafren Ultra medal and participants are issued an MTC head visor. Entry fee is £80 and payments are non-refundable; a deferral option is available for a fee within a limited time. Mandatory kit includes a backpack, OS Map 150 or downloadable maps, compass or GPS device, whistle, mobile phone and basic first aid kit. A minimum average pace of 4.0 miles per hour is required and mandatory cut-off rules apply. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
