The MTC Hafren Ultra
The MTC Hafren Ultra is a point to point ultramarathon and forms Day 1 of the MTC Severn Challenge. The course covers 27 miles with approximately 872 m of ascent and 1,069 m of descent and finishes at Mid Wales Arts Centre, Maesmawr, Caersws SY17 5SB.
The route begins with a near four mile mountain trek up Plynlimon, described in event information as the most dangerous mountain in Wales due to splattered and concealed bogs, and then follows the Severn river path back toward the start area. The organisers recommend using GPX files for navigation because the Severn Path can be overgrown and signs may be obscured.
There are two checkpoint stations on course. Checkpoint food and drink are provided and entrants may select Vegan or Gluten Free options at registration. Competitors who need other specific food must supply labelled bags for each checkpoint at registration. All events are cup free so a reusable cup is required.
All finishers receive a bespoke Hafren Ultra medal. A MTC head visor is also supplied. The event enforces a mandatory minimum pace of 4.0 miles per hour and has time restrictions at checkpoints; competitors who fall below the required pace may be removed from the race. Entrants must be 20 years or over on the start day. The race is point to point and competitors are responsible for their own travel to the start and from the finish.
