The MTC Hafren Ultra

The MTC Hafren Ultra is a point to point ultramarathon held as Day 1 of the MTC Severn Challenge. The listed course distance is 27 miles, with 872 m of ascent and 1,069 m of descent. The route begins at Rhyd-y-benwch picnic area, follows a near four mile mountain trek up Plynlimon to the source of the River Severn, then follows the Severn path back toward the start area and concludes at the Mid Wales Arts Centre in Caersws.

There are two checkpoint stations on course. Checkpoint provisions include food and drink, with entrants able to select vegan or gluten free options at registration. Athletes who require other dietary arrangements must provide labelled bags of their own food for each checkpoint at registration. The event is cup free so competitors should bring a reusable cup.

Entry is £80 and all fees are non refundable. The race is point to point and competitors must arrange their own travel to the start and from the finish. Navigation support is provided via GPX and map files and competitors are advised to use them; the organiser notes the Severn Path can be overgrown and route markings are not guaranteed.

Participants must meet minimum eligibility and kit requirements. Competitors are required to carry mandatory items including a backpack, Ordnance Survey Map 150 or equivalent, compass or GPS device, whistle, mobile phone and a basic first aid kit. A minimum average speed of 4.0 miles per hour applies and participants falling below this may be removed from the race. All finishers receive a bespoke Hafren Ultra medal and participants receive an MTC head visor. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
