The MTC Hafren Ultra
The MTC Hafren Ultra is a point to point ultra marathon and forms Day 1 of the MTC Severn Challenge. The course covers 27 miles with approximately 872 m of ascent and 1,069 m of descent. The route starts at Rhyd-y-benwch picnic area, climbs the Plynlimon to the source of the River Severn, then follows the river path to the finish at Mid Wales Arts Centre, Maesmawr, Caersws.
The race begins with a near four mile mountain trek across Plynlimon. This section crosses boggy ground and competitors are required to keep to designated routes. From the source there is an altitude drop of about 1,600 ft as the route follows the Severn’s upper reaches. The course can be unpredictable and overgrown in places, so GPX navigation files and maps are recommended.
There are two checkpoint stations offering food and drink, with vegan and gluten free options selectable at registration. Competitors may provide labelled bags with their own nutrition for checkpoints if required. The event is cup free; participants should bring a reusable cup.
Entry is non refundable; the standard solo fee is £80. Entrants must be at least 20 years old on the start day. A mandatory kit list applies and random kit checks take place; required items include a backpack, Ordnance Survey Map 150, compass or GPS device, whistle, mobile phone and a basic first aid kit. All finishers receive a bespoke finishers medal and all competitors are responsible for their own travel arrangements. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
