The MTC Hafren Ultra
The MTC Hafren Ultra is a 27 mile point to point ultra marathon held on 8 July 2026 as Day 1 of the MTC Severn Challenge. The course records a total ascent of 872 metres and a descent of 1,069 metres. The race finishes at the Mid Wales Arts Centre, Maesmawr, Caersws.
The route begins at Rhyd-y-benwch picnic area and first leads competitors on a near four mile mountain trek to the source of the Severn on Plynlimon. Plynlimon is described in the event information as having splattered and concealed bogs, so competitors are advised to keep to designated routes. A race marshal will be at the source and the route then follows the Severn Path back toward the start area, with a net altitude drop from the source of about 1,600 feet. The course passes through long established scenery and in some years the river path can be overgrown or unpredictably routed.
There are two checkpoint stations on course with food and drink provided. Checkpoint catering can be selected as vegan or gluten free at registration; competitors who need other specific foods may label and deposit their own food bags for checkpoints. All events are cup free so a reusable cup is required.
Navigation files in GPX format are available and recommended because much of the route is not signed. Entrants must meet organisers requirements for mandatory kit, adhere to a minimum average pace of 4.0 miles per hour, and satisfy the stated age and entry conditions. Finishers receive a bespoke finishers medal and competitors also receive an MTC head visor. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
