The MTC Hafren Ultra

The MTC Hafren Ultra is a point to point ultra running event and forms Day 1 of the MTC Severn Challenge. The course starts at Rhyd-y-benwch picnic area and finishes at Mid Wales Arts Centre, Maesmawr, Caersws. The published distance is 27 miles with 872 m ascent and 1,069 m descent; the route reaches a peak near 1,988 ft and a minimum altitude around 397 ft.

The route begins with an almost four mile mountain trek up Plynlimon. Organisers advise keeping to designated routes because of concealed bogs and overgrown sections. From the source of the Severn competitors follow the river path back towards Rhyd-y-benwch where CP1 is located; there is a further checkpoint near a bridge before the finish. There are two checkpoint stations and organisers provide food options for entrants who select Vegan or Gluten Free at registration. The event is cup free and participants must provide a reusable cup.

Navigation files are provided and use of GPX is recommended due to variable path conditions. Participants must carry mandatory kit including a map, compass or GPS, whistle, mobile phone, basic first aid kit and a backpack. Entrants must be 20 years or older. Entry fee information is published as a standard solo entry fee of £80 and payments are non refundable. All finishers receive a bespoke finishers medal and competitors also receive an MTC head visor.
