The MTC Hafren Ultra

The MTC Hafren Ultra is a point to point ultra running race that forms Day 1 of the MTC Severn Challenge. The course covers 27 miles with approximately 872 m ascent and 1,069 m descent and finishes at the Mid Wales Arts Centre in Caersws.

The route begins at Rhyd-y-benwch picnic area and includes a near four mile mountain trek up Plynlimon. The ascent to the source of the Severn includes areas of concealed bogs so competitors are advised to keep to the designated routes. From the source the route follows the Severn path back toward Rhyd-y-benwch which becomes CP1 and then proceeds via CP2 towards the finish. The total altitude drop from the source at this stage is about 1,600 ft.

There are two staffed checkpoints on course. Checkpoint provisions include vegan and gluten free options when selected at registration. Competitors may supply labeled personal food bags for specific checkpoints if required. Events are cup free so runners must bring a reusable cup.

Entry is by paid registration with a standard solo fee of £80. All payments are non refundable; deferral to the next year is possible for an additional £15 up to four weeks before the event. Competitors must be aged 20 or over and carry mandatory kit including a backpack, OS Map 150 or downloaded map, compass or GPS, whistle, mobile phone and basic first aid kit. A minimum average speed of 4.0 mph is enforced via cut offs at checkpoints. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
