Lyke Wake Challenge - 11 July 2026
The Lyke Wake Challenge is a point to point endurance event organised by the Quakers Running Club. The route starts near Osmotherley at Sheepwash car park, top of Cod Beck reservoir, and finishes in Ravenscar village in the grounds of the Raven Hall Hotel, covering just over 40 miles.
The event is run on a handicap basis using previous Lyke Wake times or participants' estimates. The route is not marked and all participants are expected to be familiar with the classic Lyke Wake route. The maximum time allowed to complete the event is twelve hours including the handicap. Minimum age on the day is 21. Entry is limited to 150 participants. Entry fees are £48 for UK Athletics or TRA affiliated entrants and £50 for unattached entrants. A Trail Running Association permit will be in place.
There are seven checkpoints along the course supplying drinks and most offering snacks. The Lion Inn checkpoint, just before halfway, may supply additional food such as rice pudding or tinned fruit. Plastic cups will not be provided; a drinks container is therefore mandatory.
Mandatory kit must be carried at all times and will be checked at registration. Mandatory items include a suitable paper map of the route, waterproof jacket, whistle, emergency bivvy bag or foil blanket, minimum 300 ml water or isotonic drink, a drinks container, emergency food and a fully charged mobile phone with an emergency contact number stored. Recommended kit includes gloves, hat or buff, basic first aid and suncream. Failure to carry mandatory kit will prevent participation or lead to disqualification if discovered on course.
The event crosses private land and grazing areas so dogs are not permitted. There is limited remote parking at the start and the organisers are not able to provide transport to the start or from the finish. From each entry fee a minimum of £2 is donated to both Cleveland Mountain Rescue Team and Scarborough & Ryedale Mountain Rescue Teams. Since the Quakers Running Club took on the event, donations and other contributions to local causes have amounted to over £16,000. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
