Grayson Highlands Trail Races (May 2-3, 2026)

The event is held at Grayson Highlands State Park near Mouth of Wilson, Virginia. This is the 11th annual running of the Grayson Highlands trail races. Routes pass through mountain terrain with scenic views and areas where wild ponies may be seen. Distances offered include:

Race details and services

Cutoffs are published for each distance: the 50M has a 16 hour cutoff, the 50K a 10.5 hour cutoff, the 25K a 6 hour cutoff, and the 8M a 4 hour cutoff. Reported total climbing varies by source: the 50M is listed between 7,500 and 9,500 ft, the 50K between 4,500 and 5,000 ft, the 25K about 3,000 ft, and the 8M about 1,200 to 1,400 ft. Course maps, aid station breakdowns, and a runners handbook are provided for participants. Awards are given to the top three male and female finishers in each race. All finishers receive a beanie or hat and a finishers medal; post-race food and free professional race photos are provided. The event supports the state park, a local rescue squad, and a friends group. Volunteer participation is recognized with free entries. Challenge yourself at the Seven Trails Ultra Festival in Damascus VA, November 14 to 16, 2025. Run a scenic 7.7 mile loop with chip timing and live tracking; choose 25K or tackle 100 miles to earn a handcrafted buckle.

Run scenic but rugged trails around Stone Mountain in Roaring Gap, NC with 50K, 25K and 8 Miler options. The 50K features a carryable Protection Stone and every finisher earns a unique handcrafted pottery medal.

Run the Froggy Mountain Warrior 100 near Galax VA this February in a winter group run of ten 10 mile loops with roughly 15,000 feet of climb. This low key, mostly self supported fundraiser for veterans includes a keepsake buckle.

Run flat dirt trails along the New River and Chestnut Creek in New River Trail State Park, with distances from 10K to 100k and a buckle for 100k finishers. Out and back courses have aid stations; this is a cupless event so bring a bottle.

Tackle the Froggy Mountain Sweet Sixteen 50K in Galax Virginia, a short loop course with about 500 ft vertical gain per mile and a 16 hour limit. Aid stations about every mile offer hot meals and there is free camping for runners and crew.

Kettlefoot is a scenic trail run at Doe Mountain Recreation Area near Mountain City, Tennessee, offering 50K, 25K and 13K on varied trails. Climb the 60 foot Kettlefoot Fire Tower for sweeping views across the region.
