The 50‑mile course features roughly 8,000 feet of ascent, with time limits of 8, 10, and 12 hours for the four distances. The event emphasizes a remote, challenging atmosphere with marked pink streamers and aid stations, plus a post-race meal. In 2025, modifications due to Hurricane Helene shortened the course and limited trestle usage, with staggered waves to spread runners.
