Mount Jefferson Ascent

Mount Jefferson Ascent is an untimed hike event held in West Jefferson, North Carolina on September 19, 2026. The course covers about 5 miles with roughly 1,600 feet of elevation gain and reaches a highest point above 4,600 feet.

The route begins with about 1 mile of road climb to the park entrance, then follows Mountain Ridge Trail to a left turn toward the picnic shelter. From the picnic shelter the course continues to Summit Trail, then Rhododendron Trail, Lost Province Trail, and completes a clockwise loop back to the picnic shelter for the finish.

Organizers offer a discounted hike option that allows participants to climb without being timed; those on the discounted option are included in event activities except awards. Top three overall male and female finishers receive special custom bells. All finishers receive a custom bell and spectators who cheer on the final climb also receive bells.

An after party takes place on the mountain summit with local mountain music and refreshments while participants finish. Shuttles are available to transport attendees back down once the event is complete. A portion of each registration fee is donated to the Blue Ridge Conservancy for new trail construction in Ashe County. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
