Mount Jefferson Ascent
The Mount Jefferson Ascent is an untimed hike and trail run event near West Jefferson, North Carolina, held on trails accessed from 962 Mt Jefferson Rd. The course covers about 5 miles with approximately 1,600 feet of elevation gain and reaches a high point above 4,600 feet.
The route begins with about one mile of road climb to the park entrance, then turns right onto Mountain Ridge Trail. Runners and hikers continue on Mountain Ridge Trail until a left turn toward a picnic shelter. From the picnic shelter the course follows Summit Trail to Rhododendron Trail, then Rhododendron Trail to Lost Province Trail and completes a clockwise loop back to the picnic shelter for the finish.
Participants may choose a timed ascent or a discounted untimed hike option; the untimed option is included in event activities but is not eligible for awards. All finishers receive a custom bell. Spectators who come to the final climb also receive a custom bell and the top three overall male and female finishers receive custom bells awarded for their places.
An after event is held on the mountain with local mountain music and refreshments. Shuttle service is provided to return participants downhill after the event. A portion of each registration fee is donated to the Blue Ridge Conservancy for new trail construction in Ashe County.
Registration closes September 17 at 11:59 PM ET. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
