Crystal Springs Ultra Races
The event is held at Crystal Springs Recreation Area in Wytheville, Virginia, and is organized by SWVA Running. The course uses a loop format on trails including the Crystal Springs Loop, Boundary Trail, High Rocks Spur, High Rocks Trail, Fire Road, and the Waterline. Some trail sections are technical and include notable elevation changes.
Distances offered:
- 36 mile (three 12.2-mile loops)
- 24 mile (two 12.2-mile loops)
- 12 mile (one 12.2-mile loop)
- 4 mile trail race / 3 hour Crystal Light
- 2 mile kids run
One full loop is 12.2 miles with 2,008 ft of elevation gain. The 4-mile loop is about 4 miles with 774 ft of elevation gain and can feature a waterfall after sufficient rain. The 2-mile kids run follows the Crystal Springs Loop with minimal elevation gain.
Parking at Crystal Springs is limited; a shuttle (about a 4-minute round trip) is required on race day. Shuttle parking is at 180 Pump Hollow Road; there is no parking at the start line (723 Pump Hollow Road). This is a cupless event; participants must carry a collapsible cup or bottle. Aid stations provide PB&J sandwiches, bananas, pretzels, Oreos, hard candy, limited gels, and hot food at select stations.
Packet pickup occurs the day before the race in downtown Wytheville. Entry fees are nonrefundable; transfers and rollovers are allowed under stated conditions. A limited Leftover Option ($35, 10 runners) offers entry with a leftover medal and bib but no shirt or swag bag. Awards are given for 1st–3rd overall Male, Female, and Nonbinary.
