Crystal Springs Ultra Races

Crystal Springs Ultra Races take place at the Crystal Springs Recreation Area in Wytheville, Virginia. The event uses looped trail courses that run on High Rocks Spur Trail, Boundary Trail, Crystal Springs Loop and other connecting trails. Some trail sections are technical and include notable elevation changes.

Distances and options:

  • 12 hour and 6 hour: 12.8-mile loop, 2,008 ft elevation gain
  • 3 hour (Crystal Light): 2.1-mile loop, 351 ft elevation gain
  • The Leftovers Option: entry with limited extras

For the 12 hour and 6 hour options one loop follows Crystal Springs Loop Trail to Boundary Trail to High Rocks Spur Trail to High Rocks Trail and the fire road before returning. The 3 hour Crystal Light uses the Crystal Springs Loop and may feature a waterfall after sufficient rain.

Parking at the recreation area is limited. A shuttle is required on race day and shuttle parking and the start line addresses are provided; there is no parking at the start line. This is a cupless race so participants must carry a collapsible cup or bottle. Aid stations offer PB&J sandwiches, bananas, pretzels, Oreos, hard candy, a limited number of gels and hot food at select stations.

Packet pickup is held in downtown Wytheville the day before the race. Entry fees are nonrefundable; transfers and medical rollovers are allowed under the stated policies. Awards are given for the top three overall in male, female and nonbinary divisions. Volunteers receive a race shirt and may earn transferable race entry credit for sufficient volunteer time.
