Event Overview
The Virginia 100 Mile, along with 50 Mile, 50k, and 25k races, takes place in October. The event features running on the New River Trail, a 57-mile rail trail with a dirt and crushed gravel surface. The course is known for being extremely runnable with minimal elevation change.
Course & Setting
The race is held during peak fall colors along the New River. The trail runs alongside the river, crossing it several times on old train trestles that are hundreds of feet long. Runners pass Foster Falls, an area known for its rapids.
- 100 Mile: 33-hour cutoff, 2,000 ft of gain or less. Finishers receive a buckle.
- 50 Mile: 16-hour cutoff, approximately 1,700 ft of gain.
- 50k: 12-hour cutoff, approximately 1,100 ft of gain.
- 25k: 6-hour cutoff, approximately 700 ft of gain.
All races have individual aid station cutoffs. Aid stations are placed approximately every 5-8 miles, and there is significant crew access. Drop bags are available.
Practical Information
A mandatory $5 per person fee is donated to local rescue squads. Runners are also responsible for a $7 per car, per day park entrance fee (free with an annual pass). The event includes a weekend of camping, with local food and drinks available.
All runners in the 100-mile and 50-mile races receive a pint glass and a finisher's award. 50k and 25k runners receive a finisher's award. To be guaranteed a finisher award or pint glass, participants must register by September 1st. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
