The 50K entry includes a Protection Stone that the runner carries during the course. An optional handcrafted "Blood Book" can be purchased to hold collected stones and a finisher’s pottery medal made by BlueGill Pottery. Each finisher receives a unique pottery medal.

Course, aid and rules

The course starts near the Visitor Center and follows the Bypass Trail into the Stone Mountain Loop, descends to Wolf Creek, and joins the Mountain-to-Sea Trail. The route includes an ascent of 300 stairs and returns to an aid station to complete a loop. Elevation gain is about 1,530 ft per loop. Trails are marked with red ribbons and yellow arrows. Conditions may include ice, fog, and mud.

There are five aid stations - two manned and three unmanned - and each holds a stone token. Aid station food includes pickles, bacon, candy, cereal, and fruit. Drinks listed include water, Tailwind, and soda. First aid is provided. Event rules include no dogs, no strollers, no refunds for weather, walkers allowed if they finish, trekking poles permitted, bibs worn on the front, and no unregistered runners. Run to the summit at Pilot Mountain on December 20, 2025 with 3 mile and 7 mile courses, limited to 150 runners. Enjoy scenic trails, an embroidered finisher beanie and a warm post race breakfast at the top.

Run the Froggy Mountain Warrior 100 near Galax VA this February in a winter group run of ten 10 mile loops with roughly 15,000 feet of climb. This low key, mostly self supported fundraiser for veterans includes a keepsake buckle.

Run flat dirt trails along the New River and Chestnut Creek in New River Trail State Park, with distances from 10K to 100k and a buckle for 100k finishers. Out and back courses have aid stations; this is a cupless event so bring a bottle.

Tackle the Froggy Mountain Sweet Sixteen 50K in Galax Virginia, a short loop course with about 500 ft vertical gain per mile and a 16 hour limit. Aid stations about every mile offer hot meals and there is free camping for runners and crew.

Run the 11th Grayson Highlands Trail Races at Grayson Highlands State Park near Mouth of Wilson VA on scenic mountain trails where wild ponies roam. Choose from 8 to 50 miles, with aid stations, medals and postrace food.
