The 69th Chevy Chase

The Chevy Chase is a 20-mile journey through the upland scenery of Northumberland. Organized by the Wooler Running Club, this event provides an opportunity for individuals to navigate the hills of the "land of the far horizon." The course is predominantly off-road, following tracks, footpaths, sheep paths, and crossing rough fell terrain, with only a short section on paved roads.

Participants summit two major peaks during the event: Cheviot at 2,676 feet (815m) and Hedgehope at 2,348 feet (714m). Because the route is unmarked, those taking part are responsible for choosing their own paths, provided they visit all manned checkpoints in the correct order. The ability to navigate using a map and compass is required, as low cloud visibility is possible in the hills.

The event offers two distinct categories:

  • 20-mile Run: A competitive race with a 6-hour time limit.
  • 20-mile Walk: A non-competitive challenge with a 7-hour time limit.

Registration is limited to 300 participants in total. The event base is located at the Wooler Youth Hostel. Participants must be at least 18 years old. Standard ARC safety requirements apply to all entrants. T-shirts are available as an optional purchase during the entry process. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
