Winter Canal Canter

The Winter Canal Canter is a set of trail races along the Leeds to Liverpool Canal at Wyther Lane, Kirkstall, Leeds LS5 3BT. The route is an out and back along the canal, entirely flat and mainly on good trail surfaces beside lakeside sections.

Feed and drink stations are placed about every three miles and the course is marshalled and signed. The event is licensed by the Trail Running Association under UKA rules. Finishers receive a bespoke medal and additional treats. Bibs are issued on the day at registration and registration and toilets are located next to the canal. Registration opens from 8am and attendees are advised to allow time for parking, registration and the toilets.

Travel notes: there is no parking at the start and finish; local parking is available and Kirkstall Morrisons is a short walk from the venue. The closest station is Headingley on the Northern service. The event operates a cup free approach at feed stations so runners should bring a reusable cup or bottle. Large over ear headphones are banned; bone conduction or single in ear pieces are acceptable. There may be unmarshalled road crossings. Transfers and deferrals can be self-served and deferrals are allowed up to seven days before the event. Runners should notify the nearest marshal if they need to retire. Scenic 5K, 10K and half marathon options in Bingley organised by Its Grim Up North Running, with finishers receiving a jumble medal plus hot food and a drink. Online places have sold out but places on the day are available.

Test yourself on a scenic fell course in the South West Pennines near Kelbrook, 5.5 km with 213 m of climb. On the day entry only, £7, with £2 parking at The Old Barn. Teams welcome and minimum age 16; no junior races.

Run the Trunce 4 fell race in the Peak District from Oxspring Playing Field, a scenic 6.2 km route with 190 m of climb. On the day entries are just £3 and a 3 km junior race for ages 10 plus makes it great for families.
