The Hardmoors 55 : event overview

The Hardmoors 55 is a 55-mile ultramarathon from Guisborough to Helmsley across the North York Moors and the Cleveland Hills. The course is described as being largely on the Cleveland Way National Trail, with two sections leaving the trail: Sutton Bank to the White Horse checkpoint, and the final approach to the finish. The event has a minimum age of 18 and requires each entrant to carry an OpenTracking tracker, which is included in the entry fee. Entry fees change depending on date and category; a relay entry option is available.

Course, checkpoints and rules

Checkpoints are placed along the route at Roseberry Topping (6.5 miles), Kildale Village Hall (11 miles, drop bag), Clay Bank (20 miles), Osmotherley Village Hall (30 miles, drop bag), Sneck Yate Bank (35 miles), White Horse (44 miles) and the finish at Helmsley Sports Club. Two non-returnable drop bags are allowed at Kildale and Osmotherley; runners may also have one small waterproof finish bag. Water will be provided at most checkpoints and basic food at some; hot drinks at a minimum of two checkpoints. The race is intended to be run unsupported; support crews are not allowed, but one support runner may join from Sutton Bank to the finish and must not carry a runner’s equipment. A strict mandatory kit list must be carried for the whole race; random spotchecks will be made and missing items incur defined time penalties or disqualification. Cutoffs apply at each checkpoint and the tracker may be used to check route compliance. Categories include male, female, veteran, non-binary and relay prizes.
