The Hardmoors 55

The Hardmoors 55 is a 55-mile ultramarathon taking place in the North York Moors and the Cleveland Hills. The point-to-point course runs from Guisborough to Helmsley, with a significant portion of the route following the Cleveland Way National Trail. Participants encounter over 2700 meters of total ascent and may face winter weather conditions during the event.

The event follows a self-sufficient format where runners are expected to carry their own supplies, though basic food and water are provided at specific checkpoints. A strict mandatory kit list is enforced, including items such as waterproof clothing with taped seams, spare warm layers, a headtorch, a survival bag, and navigation maps. Spot checks are conducted along the route to ensure compliance.

Available distances and categories:

  • 55 miles (Individual)
  • 55 miles (Relay Team)

The course features six primary checkpoints, some of which allow for non-returnable drop bags for supplies like gels or dry socks. A tracking system is used for all participants to monitor progress and verify that the full course is completed. There is a total time limit of 16 hours to reach the finish in Helmsley, with specific intermediate cut-off times at various locations along the path. Transport is available via a pre-booked coach that takes participants from the finish in Helmsley to the start in Guisborough before the race begins.
