About 95% of the route follows the Cleveland Way National Trail. Checkpoints and aid locations include Roseberry Topping, Kildale (11 miles), Clay Bank (20 miles), Osmotherley (30 miles), Sneck Yate Bank (35 miles), White Horse (44 miles) and the finish at Helmsley. Water is provided at most checkpoints, basic food at some, and hot drinks at a minimum of two checkpoints. Two non-returnable drop bags are allowed, at Kildale and Osmotherley; a small waterproof finish bag may be taken to the finish. A coach transfer is offered from the finish back to the start for a fee that must be booked with entry.

Rules, kit and safety

The race is designed to be run unsupported. There is a strict mandatory kit list that runners must carry for the whole race; spotchecks will be made and penalties apply for missing items, including time penalties and disqualification for some items. Runners must carry the provided tracker; sweepers are on course and anyone withdrawing must notify marshals and surrender their race number and tracker. Support crews are not allowed; one support runner is permitted from Sutton Bank to the finish but may not carry the runner's equipment.
