Summits of the North York Moors Ultra

The Summits of the North York Moors Ultra is a circular foot race of about 120 miles with roughly 16,000 ft of ascent that visits the 10 highest hills inside the North York Moors National Park. The route uses clearly defined tracks and trods and follows sections of the Cleveland Way, the Esk Valley Walk and the Lyke Wake Walk. It passes ancient burial mounds, medieval boundary stones, crosses and Bronze Age earthworks.

The event is limited to a maximum of 70 participants and has an overall time allowance of 35 hours. There are indoor checkpoints at about 40 and 80 miles that offer hot water, tea and coffee, soft drinks and a range of food options including pot noodles, jacket potatoes and some vegan and gluten free options. At those indoor checkpoints participants may access a nap area but the clock continues to run.

All entrants receive a tracker and a GPX file. One medium drop bag per participant will be taken to the indoor checkpoints. Support crews of up to three people and one vehicle are permitted but assistance is allowed only at designated checkpoint locations. Pacers and support runners are not permitted. Caching equipment beforehand is not allowed. Shops and public houses encountered on route may be used to restock.

Mandatory minimum kit is checked and includes hat and gloves, waterproof jacket and trousers, spare thermal, emergency bivvy, capacity for two litres of water, at least 250 g emergency food, head torch plus spare batteries, charged mobile with power bank and mapping apps, a suitable map and a working compass. Finishers receive a bespoke medal. The race starts and finishes at Goathland Village Hall. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
