About the race
Summits of the North York Moors Ultra is a circular foot race of approximately 120 miles within the North York Moors National Park, taking in the 10 highest hills in the area. The route follows moorland tracks and trods and uses portions of the Cleveland Way, Esk Valley Walk and Lyke Wake Walk, with about 16,000 ft of ascent and a total time limit of 35 hours. The race starts and finishes at Goathland Village Hall, Goathland.
The route passes archaeological and historic features such as burial mounds, Bronze Age earthworks, ancient crosses and medieval boundary stones, and traverses terrain shaped by glacial activity. Maximum field size is 70 participants and the minimum age is 18.
Logistics include indoor checkpoint locations at about 40 and 80 miles offering hot water, tea and coffee, soft drinks and a range of foods including Super Noodles, Pot Noodles, jacket potatoes and some vegan and gluten free options. All entrants receive a tracker and a GPX file; one medium drop bag per participant will be taken to the indoor checkpoints. Support crews are limited to a maximum of three people and one vehicle and may only assist at designated checkpoints; pacers or support runners are not permitted. Pre-caching of equipment is not allowed, and sticks and headphones are prohibited.
Mandatory minimum kit includes hat and gloves, waterproof jacket and bottoms, a spare thermal top or jacket, an emergency bivvy bag, capacity to carry 2 litres of water, at least 250 g of emergency food, a head torch with spare batteries, a charged mobile phone with power bank and leads, OS Locate and What3Words on the phone, a map (OSL 26/27 or Harvey’s North Yorkshire Moors) and a working compass. Finishers receive a bespoke medal and hot food and drinks at the finish, including vegan and vegetarian options.
