Summits of the North York Moors Ultra
Summits of the North York Moors Ultra is a circular footrace of approximately 120 miles that visits the ten highest hills within the North York Moors National Park. The route traverses hills and moorland, follows ancient tracks and trods, and includes sections of the Cleveland Way, Esk Valley Walk and Lyke Wake Walk. The course passes burial mounds, medieval boundary stones, ancient crosses and Bronze Age earthworks.
The event includes around 16,000 ft of ascent and a total time limit of 35 hour. The race starts and finishes at Goathland Village Hall. Entry is limited to 70 participants and the minimum age is 18. Entry fee information is published for the event.
There are indoor checkpoints at circa 40 and 80 miles offering hot water, tea and coffee, a range of food options including some vegan and gluten free choices, and space for participants to rest; the race clock continues during any rest. Participants receive a tracker and a GPX file of the route. One medium drop bag is taken to the indoor checkpoints.
Support crews of up to three people and one vehicle are permitted but assistance is allowed only at designated checkpoints. Pacers and support runners are not allowed. Rules forbid sticks, headphones and pre-placed caches. Shops and public houses encountered on route may be used for resupply.
Required kit includes hat and gloves, waterproof jacket and trousers, spare thermal layer, emergency bivvy bag, capacity for two litres of water, at least 250 g emergency food, headtorch with spare batteries, charged mobile phone with a power bank and OS Locate and What3Words installed, an appropriate map and a working compass.
