Summits of the North York Moors Ultra
Summits of the North York Moors Ultra is a circular foot race of approximately 120 miles with about 16,000 ft of ascent and a 35 hours time limit. The route visits the 10 highest hills within the North York Moors National Park and starts and finishes at Goathland Village Hall.
The course uses clear tracks and trods across hill and moorland and follows portions of the Cleveland Way, Esk Valley Walk and Lyke Wake Walk. The route passes ancient burial mounds, medieval boundary stones, ancient crosses and Bronze Age earthworks, and offers wide views across the moorland landscape shaped by glacial activity.
Logistics include indoor checkpoints at circa 40 and 80 miles where participants can access hot water, tea and coffee, soft drinks and a range of food options including Super Noodles, Pot Noodles, jacket potatoes and some vegan and gluten free choices. All participants receive a tracker and a GPX file; one medium drop bag will be taken to the indoor checkpoints. Entrants may have a support crew of up to three people and one vehicle but crew assistance is only allowed at designated checkpoints. Pacers and support runners are not permitted. No sticks, no headphones and no pre-placed caches of equipment or food are allowed.
A mandatory kit check will enforce minimum equipment including hat and gloves, waterproof jacket and bottoms, spare thermal top, emergency bivvy bag, capacity for two litres of water, at least 250 g of emergency food, head torch with spare batteries, a charged mobile with power bank and OS Locate and What3Words, a map (OSL 26/27 or Harvey’s North Yorkshire Moors) and a working compass. Maximum field size is 70. Finishers receive a bespoke medal and a certificate. Organised by SilverBackTrails. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
