SilverBackTrails Summits of the North York Moors Ultra
A circular footrace based at Goathland Village Hall that covers the 10 highest hills within the North York Moors National Park. The route is roughly 120 miles with about 16,000 ft of ascent and a total time limit of 35 hours. Runners follow sections of the Cleveland Way, the Esk Valley Walk and the Lyke Wake Walk across hills, moorland and ancient trods.
The course passes archaeological features including burial mounds, medieval boundary stones, ancient crosses and Bronze Age earthworks. There are indoor checkpoints at circa 40 and 80 miles with hot water, tea and coffee, food options including noodles and jacket potatoes, and some vegan and gluten free choices. Other checkpoints will supply water, pop and light snacks. Participants receive a tracker and a GPX file and may be offered reconnaissance runs before the event.
Each entrant may send one medium drop bag to the indoor checkpoints. Support crews of up to three people and one vehicle are allowed but may only assist at designated checkpoint locations; exceptions apply in emergency or retirement situations. Pacers and support runners are not permitted. Use of sticks or headphones is prohibited and caching equipment beforehand is not allowed. Shops and public houses on route may be used to resupply.
Mandatory minimum kit is specified and will be checked. Entry is limited to 70 participants and the minimum age is 18. Finishers receive a bespoke medal and a certificate. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
