Event overview

The Ranger Ultras Yorkshire Pen-Y-Ghent event is a mountain ultra running race based at Hawes Market House in the Yorkshire Dales. The distance is 50 km with a total ascent of 1280 metres. Participants must be at least 20 years old on race day. The event is held under a Trail Running Association permit and England Athletics competition rules. Entries are limited to 50 and entry fees are listed at £53 (affiliated) and £55 (unaffiliated).

Registration is available on the Friday evening before the race and on the morning of the race. Navigation course notes and a GPX file are provided to entered participants in the build-up to the event. Finishers receive eco-style medals and there are awards for the fastest male and female.

Course, support and compulsory kit

The route starts and finishes at Hawes Market House, follows the Cam Road to Horton-in-Ribblesdale, includes a summit of Pen-y-Ghent, then returns along the Cam Road. The course runs over established trails and is not waymarked beyond fixed finger posts.

On-course support includes water, snacks and hot soup at road checkpoints such as Kidhow Gate and Horton-in-Ribblesdale, plus Ranger Ultras team presence at HQ, road head and hilltop locations. Included for entrants are hot food and drinks at the finish.

A compulsory minimum kit list is enforced and includes items such as a backpack; waterproof jacket with hood; warm layers; appropriate mountain footwear; hard-copy 1:25,000 map(s) and base-plate compass; head torch with approved backup; whistle; emergency bivvy; mobile phone with UK SIM; first aid and sufficient food and fluids; and a litter bag.
