Rainow 5
The Rainow 5 is a trail and fell race held annually on the first Wednesday evening in May. Organised by members of the Macclesfield Harriers and Athletic Club, the event follows a 5 mile hilly route through the landscape of Rainow and Kerridge Ridge. The race course includes paths that cross through the Kerridge Ridge Nature Reserve.
The event is licensed under the Fell Runners Association (FRA) and is conducted according to FRA rules. Participation is limited to runners aged 16 years or older, and the total entry capacity is set at 275 participants. To manage this limit, registration is handled via a pre-entry system which closes on the Monday evening preceding the race.
Historically, the event began in 1989 and has evolved from its original course to a slightly shorter, established route. Post-race activities traditionally include the provision of cakes and social gatherings. Low-key prizes, such as bottles of local beer, are awarded to category winners.
As a community-focused event, all proceeds are donated to local charities and organizations. Beneficiaries have included Buxton Mountain Rescue, the Rainow Institute, and various local pre-schools and nature trusts.
