Rainow 5

The Rainow 5 is a small trail and fell race held on the first Wednesday in May and organised by a club member with support from Macclesfield Harriers volunteers. The race follows a hilly route around Rainow and Kerridge Ridge, including ridge top sections and local landmarks.

From 2026 the event is pre entry only via SiEntries, with entries closing the Monday before the race. The field is limited to 275 runners and entrants must be 16 years or older. The race is licensed under FRA and is run under FRA rules.

Post race refreshments feature home baked cakes and low key prizes for category winners, usually a bottle of a local beer. All proceeds from the event are donated to local organisations and charities, including Buxton Mountain Rescue, the Rainow Institute, Rainow pre school, KRIV and Cheshire Wildlife Trust. The route crosses paths managed as part of the Kerridge Ridge Nature Reserve.

The first Rainow fell race took place on 6 July 1989 and was originally called the Rainow 4 Hill race. A shorter route replaced the original longer route after a few years. A two mile fun run was held in the 1990s. After a two year gap due to the COVID pandemic there were 236 finishers and in 2023 a record 285 runners took part.
