Midsummer Mortimer Trail 2026
The Midsummer Mortimer Trail is a trail running event centered on the historic Mortimer Trail, taking participants through the landscape of the Marches of England. The routes pass through rural Shropshire and Herefordshire, featuring a mix of terrain including trails, fields, and roads. Participants travel through extensive forests, over limestone tops, and across gentle pastures.
The event follows the path of the powerful Norman Mortimer family from medieval times. The course traverses several hills and ridges with steep climbs while crossing the valleys of the rivers Arrow, Lugg, and Teme. Landmarks along the way include the Wapley hill fort, Croft Ambrey, Orleton Common, the High Vinnals, and Mary Knoll Valley. Both distances conclude at the entrance of Ludlow Castle.
The following distances are available:
- 30 mile Kington Ultra: A self-navigating route starting in Kington and traversing the full trail to Ludlow.
- 15 mile Croft Half: A shorter version starting in Aymestrey and following the final section to Ludlow Castle.
The event is open to both runners and walkers over the age of 18. Parking is provided at Ludlow Rugby Club, and organized transport is available for an additional fee to take participants from the rugby club to their respective starting points in Kington or Aymestrey. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
