Birmingham Black Country Half Marathon
The Birmingham Black Country Half Marathon is a point to point race along canal towpaths between Wolverhampton City Centre and Brindley Place in Birmingham. The course runs beside canals and uses towpaths for much of its length.
The event is organised in a time trial format. Runners are seeded by predicted finishing time and set off in waves of similar ability. Underfoot conditions vary along the route, including gravel tracks, unkempt trails and smooth pavement.
The route is largely flat, with locks and bridges providing the main inclines. A notable feature is the Coseley Tunnel, a 360 metre tunnel on the course. Drink stations are provided roughly every 3 miles from canal barges, offering water and electrolyte.
Entries are categorised to reflect different aims and abilities, with allocations described as for "Elites" and for "Socials" and for those running for charity or personal reasons. The organisers note that occasional diversions may be required at the request of land owners, in particular the Canals and Rivers Trust.
The finish is in the heart of Brindley Place. All finishers receive a bespoke finisher medal and a goody bag. Brindley Place provides nearby pubs and bars where spectators and participants can gather after the race. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
