Birmingham Canal Canter
The Birmingham Canal Canter is an event organized by the LDWA Heart of England group that explores the industrial and natural heritage of Birmingham. The route is approximately 98% off-road, follows flat terrain, and contains no stiles. Participants travel in an anticlockwise direction along a circular course starting and finishing at Moseley Rugby Club on Billesley Common.
The courses follow a variety of waterways including the Stratford Canal, the Worcester-Birmingham Canal, the New Main Line, the Fazeley Canal, the Grand Union Canal, and the River Cole. Depending on the chosen distance, participants pass several landmarks such as the Kings Norton Guillotine Lock, Bournville Village, Birmingham University, the Gas Street Basin, and Sarehole Mill. The longer routes also visit Edgbaston Reservoir, the Soho loop, and Spaghetti Junction.
Participants can choose from three different distances:
- 18.5 miles (Mini Canter)
- 26.5 miles (Canter Marathon)
- 30 miles (Maxi Canter)
The event provides checkpoints along the route—four for the 30-mile course, three for the 26.5-mile course, and two for the 18.5-mile course. These stations offer food and cold drinks, though participants must provide their own drinking vessel as no cups are supplied. A meal with vegetarian and vegan options is provided at the finish, and shower facilities are available on-site. All finishers receive a badge and a certificate. Free parking is available at the venue. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
