Langdale Horseshoe
The Langdale Horseshoe is an Ambleside AC fell race held on Saturday 9 October 2027. The course distance and climb are 21.1 km / 1450 m (12.5 miles / 4600 ft). The route runs over largely rocky and slippery ground with many pathless sections; October weather can reduce visibility and make navigation difficult.
The event follows Fell Runners Association safety rules and restrictions on certain GPS functions. Previous mountain experience is required and will be checked during entry; the organiser asks for two medium or long mountainous category A non GPS fell races in the previous three years or similar relevant mountain experience.
Entries open on 1 August via the SI Entries system. Entry fees are £13.50 for FRA members and £16.50 for non FRA members and include a free warm pie. Entry is limited to 550. Entries close on the Thursday night of the week before the race; there are no refunds but substitutions are permitted up to that closing time. SportIdent dibbers lost or damaged are charged at £30 and this cost is passed to the competitor.
Teams may be entered (men four, ladies three) at no extra cost. Race parking and registration are near the Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel at the head of the Langdale valley. Checkpoints include Stream/Path (grid ref 289080), Thunacar Knott (279080), Angle Tarn (246078), Esk Hause Shelter (235083), Bowfell (245064), Crinkle Crags (249049), Pike O’Blisco (271042) and Cattle Grid (289051).
Record times stand at 1:55:03 for men and 2:22:50 for women; a £100 prize is offered to any winner who breaks these records. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
