British Athletics Uphill Only Trial Race

The British Athletics Uphill Only Trial Race serves as the official selection event for the 2026 UK Athletics Senior and U20 teams competing in the European Off-Road Running Championships. The event takes place in Keswick, Cumbria, with the race routes starting at Fitz Park and finishing on the slopes or summit of Skiddaw.

Participants can choose from two distinct course distances:

  • 8.6 km (Senior): Features 945m of ascent, passing through Latrigg and finishing at the summit of Skiddaw.
  • 4.2 km (U20): Includes 450m of ascent, following the main tourist route to the 570m contour line.

The competition is open to all runners, including endurance athletes from other disciplines who may not have previous experience in mountain or hill running. All entries must be completed in advance, as there is no registration on the day. Participants are required to carry specific safety equipment, including a waterproof top with taped seams, hat, gloves, and a thermal top, as the race concludes in an exposed mountain environment.

Facilities at Fitz Park Pavilion include toilets and refreshments for athletes. Parking is available in public car parks and on-road locations within Keswick. Athletes are responsible for their own descent from the finish line back to the valley. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
