Devil o' the Highlands Footrace

The Devil o' the Highlands Footrace is a point-to-point ultramarathon held in the highlands of Scotland. First run in 2003, it is recognized as the second oldest ultramarathon in the country. The course follows the West Highland Way trail, beginning in Tyndrum and finishing in Fort William. The route consists of 95% trail and 5% road, and it is fully way-marked, meaning no personal navigation is required.

The event offers a single distance:

  • 42 miles (69 km) with 6500ft (1981 m) of total ascent.

Participants must complete the course within a 12-hour time limit. The race includes four checkpoints, and participants have access to two food drop bag locations. Organizers provide baggage transport from the start to the finish line. At the finish in Fort William, runners have access to showers, hot food, and drinks.

Mandatory equipment for all participants includes an emergency foil blanket, a waterproof jacket with a hood and taped seams, waterproof trousers, and a functional mobile phone. Use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen on race day is prohibited. While limited earphone use is permitted, running poles may only be used after the first 7 miles. The event is open to runners aged 20 and older, and no specific prior ultra-running experience is required for entry. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
