Trail Ultramarathon in the Scottish Highlands

The Devil o' the Highlands Footrace is a point-to-point trail ultramarathon covering a distance of 42 miles (69 km). The route follows the West Highland Way trail, starting in Tyndrum and finishing in Fort William. Participants encounter approximately 6,500 feet (1,981 m) of total ascent throughout the course. The terrain consists of 95% trail and 5% road.

The event features a way-marked route that requires no map reading or navigation. Runners must complete the distance within a 12-hour time limit. There are four established checkpoints along the course:

  • 7 miles: Bridge of Orchy
  • 17 miles: Glencoe Mountain Resort
  • 27 miles: Kinlochleven
  • 35 miles: Lundavra

Mandatory gear for all participants includes an emergency foil blanket, a waterproof jacket with a hood and taped seams, and a charged mobile phone. The use of ibuprofen or other NSAIDs as painkillers during the race is forbidden.

The organizers provide several services, including baggage transport from the start to the finish line and food drop bag transport to the Glencoe and Kinlochleven checkpoints. At the finish in Fort William, runners have access to hot food, showers, and changing facilities. The event is an LGBTI+ friendly competition and offers equal entry allocation for different genders.
