Devil o' the Highlands Footrace : event overview

The Devil o' the Highlands Footrace is a 42 mile (69 km) point-to-point trail ultramarathon along the West Highland Way from Tyndrum to Fort William in Scotland. The route is way-marked so no navigation is required and is approximately 95% trail and 5% road. Total ascent for the course is about 6,500 ft (1,981 m) and the event has a 12 hour time limit.

There are four checkpoints on the route with on-course supplies and two locations offering runner drop bags. The checkpoints are located at Bridge of Orchy (7 miles), Glencoe Mountain Resort (17 miles), Kinlochleven (27 miles) and Lundavra (35 miles). Organisers provide start-to-finish baggage transport, pre- and post-race buses for an extra cost, and free showers and hot food at the finish.

Mandatory kit includes an emergency foil blanket, a waterproof jacket with hood and taped seams, waterproof trousers and a charged mobile phone. Running poles are permitted only after the Bridge of Orchy checkpoint. The use of ibuprofen, diclofenac and other NSAIDs on race day is forbidden. Spectator access and external support are allowed only at specified locations.

The event describes multiple inclusivity measures: an active gender entry system with female, male and nonbinary options, period products available at portaloos and gender neutral toilets, pregnancy/adoption deferral options, provisions for breastfeeding runners, and measures to support participants on low incomes. Organisers also operate an opt-out t-shirt system to reduce environmental impact with proceeds directed to charity. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
