Desolate Peaks

Desolate Peaks is a peak bagging event in the Desolation Wilderness near South Lake Tahoe, California, that gathers several dozen mountain runners. Participants leave together from the Twin Lakes trailhead and navigate an unmarked route from peak to peak using their own route planning and route finding. The route is mostly off trail and includes talus fields of broken rock, granite ledges, scrambling on hands and feet, and creek crossings.

The event is free and marginally supported with drop bags available at Echo Lakes parking. There is a 30 hour time limit for completing the full circuit. The fun run typically takes 11 to 20 hours to complete. Only one person has finished the full 21 Peaks circuit to date. The organizers state this event is not intended to teach off trail navigation or basic mountain travel; years of experience or elite level physical capability are recommended.

Course options include:

  • 21 Peaks the original 17 peaks plus four Lucifer's Frolic peaks
  • 17 Peaks the original beast circuit
  • 11 Peak Fun Run shuttle return from Fallen Leaf

Key locations mentioned include Twin Lakes trailhead, Echo Lakes parking for drop bags, and Fallen Leaf trailhead as the last bailout. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
