Death at DuPuis (A Backyard Event)
Death at DuPuis is a not-for-profit last person standing running event in Canal Point, Florida, held on looped terrain within the DuPuis Management Area. Participants run a single loop of 4.166667 miles that restarts at the top of each hour; laps continue until only one runner completes the loop on time or all participants stop.
The event follows Backyard rules to approximate Big's Backyard in Tennessee. Organizers provide warning whistles at three, two and one minute before each hour. Coolers, chairs and canopies are set up near the start/finish on a first-come, first-serve basis. The race format includes a bronze ticket that grants entry into Capital in Virginia, and the winner receives a $1,000 stipend.
The event is organized as a fundraiser for trail maintenance. Entry fees cover shirts, portable toilets, awards, timing and aim for a minimum $2,000 donation to the Loxahatchee chapter of the Florida Trail Association. Past events have returned more than $10,000 to the FTA. There are no refunds for participants who drop; fees from dropped entries are directed to the Loxahatchee FTA donation pot. Entry-fee assistance may be available on request for financial hardship.
The DuPuis Management Area covers about 21,875 acres of ponds, wet prairies, cypress domes, pine flatwoods and remnant Everglades marsh and features hiking and horseback trails, a nature center, boardwalks and primitive campsites. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
