The Calderdale Way Ultra is an off-road ultra running event based at Heptonstall Social and Bowling Club, Acre Lane, HX7 7LT, England. The route follows the Calderdale Way trail around moorland, woodland and valleys, passing towns and villages including Halifax, Hebden Bridge and Todmorden. Total ascent for the full route is listed as 2438 m / 7999 ft. Minimum age to enter is 18. The event holds a permit and associated UK Athletics insurance from the FRA.

Race format and support

The 50-mile course is a circular route starting and finishing in Heptonstall. The 30-mile course starts at Brookfoot Lock, Brighouse, and joins the same finishing section into Heptonstall. The 100-mile option is two laps of the 50-mile course. Mandatory kit must be carried at all times.

Support includes multiple vegan-friendly aid stations placed on the course, GPS tracking, baggage storage and a bag drop option for the 50-mile event at a mid-course checkpoint. Entries include a finisher’s medal, post-race food, and downloadable event photography. The 50-mile route has an overall time limit of 17 hours and some non-negotiable checkpoint cut-offs; the 30-mile route has a 10-hour limit and the 100-mile format involves an 11-hour requirement for the first loop.

Entry and registration

Pre-entry is required; there are no entries on the day. Registration is available in the village the evening before and on the morning of the event, with the 30-mile runners able to register at the start location. Two winter races from Great Owl Running on 24 January 2026 at Kirkstall Bridge. A roughly 16 km multi terrain route follows the canal and River Aire while a 10 km out and back runs along the canal.

Run the Petzl Night Runner at Rivington under head torch light, choosing 10 km or a half marathon on glow in the dark trail signage. Expect rough, boggy, rocky terrain, a finisher medal and lively post race buzz.

The North of England Cross Country Championships come to Pontefract Race Course on 24 January 2026, with races for U13 to senior athletes on a challenging parkland course. Chip timing and club colours required, entries close 18 January.

Take on The Half & Half 10 km on 25 January 2026 at Sowerby Bridge for a split terrain challenge. Rugged muddy trails and obstacles give way to a tarmac finish, entries are limited to 100 and hoodies are available to pre order.
