Crown King Scramble
The Crown King Scramble is a point-to-point footrace in Arizona that spans 50 kilometers (31 miles). The course begins at Lake Pleasant Regional Park in Morristown and finishes in the historic town of Crown King. This route transitions through several climate zones, moving from the Sonoran Desert at an elevation of 1,700 feet to the ponderosa pines of the Bradshaw Mountains, reaching a peak elevation of 6,563 feet.
The event follows a variety of terrain types:
- The first half consists of rolling dirt forest roads with a smooth surface.
- The second half transitions to a rough four-wheel-drive jeep trail.
Participants climb a total of 6,828 feet during the race. The course includes five aid stations spaced between 3.2 and 8.5 miles apart, offering water, electrolyte drinks, fruit, and snacks. This is a cupless event, meaning runners must carry their own hydration containers. Due to the remote nature of the terrain, neither crews nor pacers are permitted on the course.
The time limit for the event is 11 hours, with specific cutoffs enforced at the French Creek aid station and the finish line. One-way shuttle services are available for purchase to transport runners from the finish in Crown King back to the start at Lake Pleasant. Finishers receive a custom award, and a post-race barbecue is provided in town. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
