Crown King Scramble
The Crown King Scramble is a point to point 50 kilometer (31 mile) footrace from Lake Pleasant to the town of Crown King in Arizona. The course begins on the shores of Lake Pleasant and travels through the Sonoran Desert, climbing through scrub brush and junipers before reaching ponderosa and other pine stands in the Bradshaw Mountains. The route gains approximately 6,828 feet of elevation and reaches a maximum elevation near 6,563 feet; the course tops out just before mile 29 and includes a final descent into the finish at the Crown King Saloon.
The course uses rolling dirt forest roads for the first half and rough four wheel drive jeep trail for the second half. Aid stations are positioned along the course and provide water, an electrolyte drink (Gnarly Hydrate), fruit, and sweet and salty snacks; aid station spacing ranges roughly from 3.2 to 8.5 miles. Drop bags are permitted only at the French Creek aid station (mile 15.3) and at the finish and must be labeled appropriately. Crews and pacers are not allowed on course; crews may meet runners at the finish.
Event operations include chip timing with live splits, shuttle service from the finish back to the start, on course medical teams, post race barbecue, and awards for top finishers plus a custom finisher award for all finishers. This edition is a cupless event; participants must carry their own container for aid station refills. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
