The Anglezarke Amble Challenge
The Anglezarke Amble is a one-day challenge walk around Rivington, Anglezarke and Turton Moors in the West Pennine Moors. The event offers two route options:
- 24 miles long route
- 16–17 miles shorter route
The route passes through Lever Park and visits landmarks such as Rivington Pike and Winter Hill, the highest point of the walk at almost 1,500 ft. It crosses moorland, reservoir watersheds and rural tracks, including sections past Belmont Reservoir, Turton and Entwistle Reservoir and Darwen Moors where Darwen Tower stands. The long and short routes meet again in Roddlesworth Woods, then continue over Great Hill to White Coppice and alongside Anglezarke, Yarrow and Upper Rivington reservoirs before finishing in Rivington.
Practical details include a ten hour completion limit and a requirement that runners use the long route only. Checkpoints provide refreshments at set points on each route; specific checkpoints are sited on the long and short courses. Entrants must carry map, compass, whistle, torch, waterproofs, first aid kit, food, drink and a mug; random equipment checks are applied and failure to comply may result in disqualification. Retirements are accepted at checkpoints only and tallies must be handed to checkpoint officials. Dogs are not permitted. Entry fees cover refreshments at checkpoints, food at the finish and a participation certificate. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
