The Anglezarke Amble : overview
The Anglezarke Amble is a challenge walk organised by LDWA West Lancashire, scheduled for Saturday 14 February 2026. The event is based at Rivington Village Hall (postcode BL6 7SE). The route runs across Rivington, Anglezarke and Turton Moors in the West Pennine Moors and uses reservoir watersheds to avoid most habitation. There are two routes, including a long route of 24 miles and a shorter route. Runners are allowed only on the long route. Entrants must complete their chosen route within a 10 hour time limit. Entry fees are £12 for LDWA members and £18 for non-members; this includes checkpoints refreshments, food at the finish and a certificate.
Route, checkpoints and requirements
The route passes notable features such as Lever Park, Rivington Pike, Winter Hill (about 1500 ft and the highest point on the walk), Turton and Entwistle Reservoir, Darwen Moors and Darwen Tower, Roddlesworth Woods, Great Hill, White Coppice and several reservoirs before finishing at Rivington. Checkpoints and refreshment points are provided: the short route has refreshment after 9.6 miles at Slipper Lowe; the long route has refreshment at Entwistle Barn after 10.1 miles and at Slipper Lowe after 18 miles. Participants must carry mandatory equipment including a map, compass, whistle, torch, waterproofs, first aid kit, food, drink and a mug. Random equipment checks may be made and failure to comply can result in disqualification. Dogs are not allowed. Retirements must be made at checkpoints and tallies handed in to checkpoint officials.
