The Anglezarke Amble Challenge
The Anglezarke Amble is a timed challenge walk across Rivington, Anglezarke and Turton Moors in the West Pennine Moors, an area described locally as the "Little Lake District". The route stays largely within the reservoir watershed and passes a sequence of upland and wooded landscapes before finishing in Rivington.
The course visits several named landmarks and features, including Lever Park, Rivington Pike, Winter Hill at almost 1500 ft with its television mast and Scotsman’s Post, Belmont, Turton and Entwistle Reservoir, Darwen Moors and Darwen Tower, Roddlesworth Woods, Great Hill and White Coppice with its cricket field. The route crosses open moorland and sections of historic reservoir country, including areas where farmhouses were abandoned when reservoirs were built.
There are two route options:
- Short route about 16–17 miles
- Long route 24 miles
Walkers may choose either route. Runners may take only the long route. Both routes have a ten hour completion limit. Refreshments are provided at checkpoints and food is supplied at the finish as part of the entry fee. Entrants must carry specified equipment for winter moorland conditions, including a map, compass, whistle, torch, waterproofs, first aid kit, food, drink and a mug. Random equipment checks may be applied and failure to comply can lead to disqualification. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
