Wildlands Summit Run

The Wildlands Summit Run is the 33rd annual trail event at Great Pond Mountain, established in 1993 and formerly called the Wildlands Trail Run. This edition uses the 6.2-mile summit course for its second year and also offers a shorter fun run.

Distances:

  • 6.2 miles to the summit of Great Pond Mountain.
  • 1 mile Fun Run to the banks of the Dead River.

The summit route follows single-track forest trails, passes scenic lookouts, and crosses granite slabs and rooty, rocky sections. Runners ascend about 1,009 feet to the summit and return on a technical descent that uses downhill mountain bike trails with berms. The descent finishes on Dead River Road at Half-Mile Field where the event gathers for food, awards, and merchandise sales.

The Fun Run follows a mixture of gravel road and trail down the Picnic Trail to the Dead River. Course details are subject to change.

Parking is accessed through the GPMCT Dead River Trailhead Gate on Don Fish Road; drivers continue on a gravel road until directed where to park. The event is presented by the Great Pond Mountain Conservation Trust. The run serves as a fundraiser for GPMCT, which manages 5,200 acres for wildlife habitat, sustainable forestry, and community trails in Hancock County, Maine.
