TUCARD

TUCARD is a trail event organized by Marsh Island Trail Runners in Orono, Maine. The event is a fundraiser for the Orono Land Trust and supports public access to private lands. The race lists a start point at 44.89849ºN, 68.68441ºW and a finish point at 44.89150ºN, 68.68413ºW.

The course has no single defined route. Racers receive waypoints and may visit them in any order. A mini course and a full course are mentioned, with waypoint counts released incrementally. The rules and the waypoint locations are revealed over the year before race day, with waypoint locations announced in the weeks prior. Registered participants get access to a zoomable map that updates as course information is released. Registration before August 1 provides early release of waypoints and an option to order a race t-shirt; registration is always free for Wabanaki Tribal Members.

The event format allows multiple modes of travel and notes that participants may run, bike, canoe, or use other means. A final special rule, referred to as the super secret sparkle pony rule, is revealed near the end of the pre race process and is intended to alter competitors’ strategy.
