Vertical Mile Challenge

The Vertical Mile Challenge, held at Rocky Face Mountain Recreational Area in Hiddenite, North Carolina, is an annual endurance race featuring two distances: a full Vertical Mile (8 laps) and a Half Vertical Mile (4 laps). The course consists of a nearly 2-mile loop that includes a steep half-mile climb known as the "Stairway to Heaven," followed by a downhill section back to the start/finish line. Aid stations provide water, sports drinks, snacks, and pickles, with additional water available on the trail. The event limits registration to 175 participants and offers awards for overall and local finishers, as well as fastest first lap times in the full Vertical Mile race.
