The routes share similar sections through mature woodland. Most surfaces are well maintained trails, mainly crushed stone or trodden forest floor, with no asphalt except two road crossings on the longer routes. The majority of the course is hard packed trail, though grassland sections can become soft after rain. Road shoes may be sufficient in typical summer conditions, but a light trail shoe is often more suitable.

Salcey Forest is a Forestry England site with a café and toilets. Parking is charged on site, listed between £3.80 and £9. The number 33 bus stops inside the forest and connects Northampton and Milton Keynes; the nearest train station is Northampton. The venue is about 18 minutes from Northampton and 9 minutes from Junction 15 of the M1.

Entry uses tiered pricing with lower fees for earlier entries and no booking fee. Unaffiliated entrants pay an additional £2. The event operates cupless aid stations, so participants must carry a cup or bottle; a cup or bottle holding at least 200 ml is mandatory for half marathon, marathon and 50 km entrants. A foil blanket and a charged mobile phone are strongly advised. Missing mandatory kit results in a one hour time penalty. All finishers receive a medal and a choice of Big Bear drink.
