The Stoop

Haworth, United Kingdom • 21 Dec 2025

Event overview

The Stoop is a short fell race organised by Wharfedale Harriers at Penistone Hill Country Park near Haworth. It forms the second race of the Woodentops Race Series, which comprises Withins Skyline, The Stoop and Stanbury Splash. Chip timing is used for senior races. The event is for over-16s; junior races are held separately. Organisers advise that full kit may be required (for example waterproof jacket with hood, leggings, hat and gloves) and state that if a decision is made that kit is required then no kit = no run. Entrants receive a Santa hat and a Curly Wurly; teams of three are free.

Course, entry and facilities

The route starts from the quarry bottom on Penistone Hill, follows a track past Drop Farm to Harbour Lodge, crosses the beck via the right-hand footbridge (the left-hand bridge is unsafe), then climbs through heather to the Standing Stone (the Stoop). The route returns down through boggy sections to the track at Drop Farm and finishes on the cricket pitch by the club hut. The published distance is about 8 km (approx 4.9 miles) with a climb of about 250 m (700 ft).

Entry options include online entry for £9, an on-the-day fee of £10 and a combined entry option for all three Woodentops races for £25. Race headquarters is the Old Cricket Club, Penistone Hill Country Park. Facilities: toilets only; there are no water stations, distance markers, changing rooms, showers or baggage store. Prize giving is held outside the cricket hut after the race, with prizes for top finishers and teams. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
