Course and logistics
The course is one 20.35 mile loop made up of five legs of about 3.2-5.3 miles each; distances are completed by repeating the loop (for example 2 laps for 40 miles, 5 laps for 100 miles). The route changes direction each year - clockwise on odd years and counterclockwise on even years. Terrain is approximately 75% single or double track and 25% jeep roads, and includes steep climbs, ridgeline sections, steep descents, creek bottoms, and pine floor. Estimated elevation gain and loss: about 3,000 feet for the 20 mile, 6,000 for the 40 mile, 9,000 for the 100k, and 15,000 for the 100 mile. Two indoor aid stations are on course and runners may use drop bags at both aid stations for solo entries. Pacers must register and are permitted for solo 100 mile and 100k runners after the completion of 40 miles. Relay teams must run legs in sequential order and each team member must run at least one leg. Awards, swag, and mileage-based recognition are provided for finishers.
