The Bullock Smithy Hike / Ultra 56

The Bullock Smithy Hike / Ultra 56 is organised by 3rd Hazel Grove Scout Group and takes place on the first full weekend in September, this instance on Saturday 5 to Sunday 6 September 2026. It is a 24 hour hike and ultra run covering 56 miles on a circular route that starts and finishes in Hazel Grove, crossing terrain in the Peak District.

The course uses a combination of public footpaths, bridleways and roads and is completely unmarked. Participants are expected to navigate the route, including sections in darkness, and are advised to recce any parts they will tackle at night. Required physical maps are OL1 and OL24; digital alternatives are not accepted as replacements.

Staffed checkpoints are provided along the route at locations including Hazel Grove, Bowstones, Chinley Churn, Edale Cross, Edale, Castleton, Peak Forest, Millers Dale, Chelmorton, Earl Sterndale, Brand Top, Wildboarclough, Rainow and Whiteley Green.

Entry details for 2026: entries open 11 January 2026 and close 30 August 2026, with an entry fee of £50. Refunds are available only prior to 31 July subject to a 10 percent transaction fee and there are no deferrals. Entry includes refreshments at checkpoints, a full English breakfast on finishing, a timed certificate and a 50th anniversary item. A commemorative keepsake will be offered later at additional cost.

Mandatory personal equipment includes a compass and whistle, torch and spare batteries, high visibility clothing, waterproof coat and trousers, spare jumper, emergency rations, a mug for checkpoint refreshments, a first aid kit and foil blanket, and OS Locate or What3Words downloaded on the phone.
