The Bullock Smithy Hike / Ultra 56 - 5th to 6th September 2026

The Bullock Smithy Hike / Ultra 56 is a 24 hour hike and ultra marathon covering 56 miles in the Peak District. The event is organised by 3rd Hazel Grove Scout Group and is held on the first full weekend in September, with the 50th edition scheduled for 5th to 6th September 2026. The course is a circular route starting and finishing in Hazel Grove.

The route uses public footpaths, bridleways and roads and is completely unmarked; participants are expected to navigate on course, including during hours of darkness. It is recommended that competitors recce sections they will visit in darkness. Checkpoints are placed along the route and refreshments are provided at checkpoints. On finishing, participants receive a Full English breakfast, a timed certificate and a unique 50th anniversary item. A commemorative keepsake will be offered later for an additional cost.

Entry details: entries open 11 January 2026 and close 30 August 2026. Entry fee is £50. Refunds are available before 31 July less a 10% transaction fee; no deferrals are available. Entry includes checkpoint refreshments and finish provisions.

Required equipment must be carried and confirmed by entrants and includes physical OL1 and OL24 maps, compass, whistle, torch and spare batteries, high visibility clothing, waterproof coat and trousers, spare jumper, emergency rations, a mug for checkpoint refreshments, a first aid kit and foil blanket, and OS Locate or What3Words on a phone. A long BL fell race around Wadsworth with navigational sections and mandatory FRA kit. The route is about 19.3 miles (31 km) with 1110 m ascent. Pre entry closes 6 February 2026 and very limited places may be available on the day.

The Drop 6 is a blindfolded, **6-mile** microadventure for people living 30+ miles from the venue; participants are dropped in an unknown location and must return to HQ without GPS or maps, solo or in teams of up to four.

A winter fell race from the Rams Head Inn across moorland and the Pennine Way, roughly 12 miles with 2100 feet of ascent. Checkpoints provide basic supplies and full FRA winter kit is required.

A chip timed 5k, 10k and half marathon around Heaton Park with mainly path running and one trail section. The event supports Shelter, offers medals and on-course marshals, and includes accessibility for buggies and most wheelchairs.
