The Bullock Smithy Hike / Ultra 56 : 5th to 6th September 2026

The Bullock Smithy Hike is a 24 hour hike or ultra run of 56 mile organised by 3rd Hazel Grove Scout Group. The course is a circular route that starts and finishes in Hazel Grove and takes place over the first full weekend in September. 2026 is the event's 50th edition.

The route uses public footpaths, bridleways and roads and is completely unmarked. Participants are expected to navigate the course, including hours of darkness, and it is recommended to recce sections likely to be visited at night. Checkpoints on the route include Hazel Grove, Bowstones, Chinley Churn, Edale Cross, Edale, Castleton, Peak Forest, Millers Dale, Chelmorton, Earl Sterndale, Brand Top, Wildboarclough, Rainow and Whiteley Green.

Entry includes refreshments at checkpoints, a Full English breakfast at the finish, a timed certificate and a unique 50th anniversary item. A commemorative keepsake will be offered later in the year at additional cost.

Participants must carry required equipment and confirm responsibility for it. Required items include physical OL1 and OL24 maps, a compass and whistle, torch with spare batteries, high visibility jacket or reflective strips, waterproof coat and trousers, spare jumper, emergency rations, a mug for checkpoint refreshments, first aid kit and foil blanket, and OS Locate or What3Words downloaded on a phone.

A night score event at The Railway Inn in Marple on Tuesday 27th January. Choose a 40, 60 or 75 minute course, use MapRun or a paper backup, and note late entries are not guaranteed a map.

Timed lap based event on a flat 5.3 km riverside out and back near Hardy Farm in Manchester, with flexible distances from 5 km to ultra and a seven hour time limit. Medal free entry option and a charity donation per finisher.

Hoofstones Fell Race in Todmorden covers 8 miles with 425 m of climb across the Pennines, testing navigation skills. Race HQ is the Staff of Life pub where post race refreshments and prizes await; entries accepted pre entry or on the day.

Take on the Dovedale Big Daddy on 1 February 2026, an AL fell race in the Peak District covering 20.4 km with 1370 m ascent and nine steep climbs through the Manifold and Dovedale valleys. Entries close 29 January and are limited to 250.
