Event Overview
The Stories Trail Runs is a winter trail running event held at Cheyenne Mountain State Park in Colorado Springs. Part of the Human Potential Running Series, the event takes place against the backdrop of Cheyenne Mountain and Pike’s Peak, offering views of the Colorado Front Range. The course consists of multiple loops within the state park, starting and finishing at the Limekiln Trailhead.
Available Distances
Participants can choose from several traditional distance races or timed events:
- 10k: A multi-loop course covering 6.83 miles with 1,013 feet of elevation gain.
- Half Marathon: A three-loop course covering 13.89 miles with 2,232 feet of elevation gain.
- 20-Mile: A four-loop course covering 19.46 miles with 3,090 feet of elevation gain.
- 6-Hour timed run: Participants complete as many miles as possible using alternating loops.
- 15-Hour timed run: Participants run a sequence of four different loops that increase in distance and gain.
Course Details and Conditions
The timed events utilize a sequence of color-coded loops: Red (3.08 miles), Green (3.75 miles), Blue (5.34 miles), and Purple (7.28 miles). During the final hour of timed events, a special 1.27-mile Gold Loop is used.
The trails are located at an elevation where winter weather is unpredictable. Conditions often include snow, ice, or Significant mud due to permafrost. Runners are responsible for providing their own State Park Pass. The main staging area at the trailhead serves as the primary aid station and storage area for drop bags.
Participation Details
The event has a total capacity of 225 runners across all distances. Participants receive a race shirt and a finisher's award. Multi-day passes are available for those wishing to compete on both Saturday and Sunday. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
