Pikes Peak Ascent and Marathon
Manitou Springs, United States • 21-22 Sep 2024
The Pikes Peak Marathon, established in 1956, is the oldest continuously held marathon in the United States. The race takes runners from Manitou Springs, Colorado, to the summit of Pikes Peak at 14,115 feet and back down, covering a total of 26.2 challenging mountain miles. The Pikes Peak Ascent, a sister race, climbs about 7,800 vertical feet up the historic Barr Trail on the east face of the mountain.
The Ascent, spanning 13.3 miles to finish at the summit, used to be held on the same day as the Marathon but became a separate event in the 1980s due to its popularity. The course is described as a relentless uphill grind with varying grades and physiological demands due to the elevation. The event is hosted in Manitou Springs, offering various lodging, dining, and sightseeing opportunities for participants. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
