Stanhope Trail Races

Stanhope Trail Races are trail running events based at Stanhope Showground in Stanhope, County Durham. The routes run through the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and UNESCO Global Geopark, featuring open heather moors, upland rivers, woods, waterfalls, stone-built villages and evidence of local mining heritage. The minimum age for entry is 16.

Distances and elevation:

  • 10k (approx 7 miles, 1200 ft elevation)
  • Half-marathon (approx 14.6 miles, 1887 ft elevation)

The courses are fully waymarked and marshalled. Feed stations are provided on course at about 4.5 miles and 9 miles. Medical cover is available and food and snacks are served at the show ground after the finish. Each finisher receives a bespoke memento. Prizes are awarded for 1st to 3rd senior male and female, plus first place in V40-49, V50-59, V60-69 and 70+ categories.

Organisers require mandatory kit; as a general guide they recommend full body cover, hat and gloves, waterproof jacket and trousers, an emergency blanket or survival bag, plus food and water. Event parking is available at the show ground with additional parking in Stanhope town centre if needed. The event is run with eco measures in place, including avoiding disposable plastic cups and collecting pre-loved running kit for up-cycling.
