Sombrero Sizzler : Jacksonville, FL

Sombrero Sizzler is the third annual event organized by Sombrero Running Events at Cecil Field, 5827 New World Road in Jacksonville, Florida. The event stages timed running and rucking efforts on a paved loop with trees along much of the route.

The course is a 1.25 mile paved loop composed of three quarters asphalt and one quarter concrete walking path, with a short grassy section at the end. The route is flat with minimal turns, runs through a former military base, and is shaded by pine trees during the morning hours with some exposed sections later in the day.

Event formats include:

  • 3 hour individual event
  • 6 hour individual event, with relay team option
  • 9 hour individual event
  • 12 hour individual event

The relay option is for the 6 hour event and allows four person teams of any gender, with a team limit noted by the organizer. Teams must exchange the bib and timing chip between members.

There is one main aid station at the pavilion with standard ultra foods and Skratch Electrolyte. Grilled food will be available throughout the day, including breakfast items, burgers with vegan options, brats, Italian sausage, and bacon. Each participant receives a custom medal; other swag items are to be determined. Awards include overall top three in each event, additional special awards, and team awards depending on participation.

Parking is along the road into the pavilion area, which provides direct access to the course. Local hotels and restaurants are within a few miles. The organizer lists a charity partner and several sponsors. Refunds are not provided and may be treated as donations. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
