Sole Survivor Backyard Ultra - Richland, WA

Richland, United States • 12 Sep 2026

Event Concept

The Sole Survivor Backyard Ultra is a timed event where runners compete to be the last person standing. It is inspired by the "Big's Backyard Ultra" format. The race starts on the hour, every hour.

Course and Format

All participants run the same 4.167-mile trail loop within one hour. The first section of the loop is on pavement to thin the field before a single-track trail. The loop features minimal elevation gain. At the top of each new hour, all remaining runners start the loop again. This continues until only one runner remains.

Race Progression and Finish

The event continues hour by hour until only two runners are left. If one fails to start or finish a loop, the other must complete one final solo loop to become the sole finisher. All other participants receive a DNF. The total race distance is determined by the last person to drop out. Distances reached include a marathon at 7 hours, a 50K at 8 hours, 50 miles at 12 hours, and 100 miles at 24 hours.

Facilities and Rules

One aid station is located at the start/finish area with typical fare and ice. Hot soup is provided overnight. Crews are allowed but pacers are not. Runners must be in the starting corral before the top of each hour; no late starts are permitted. Personal canopies, chairs, and warm clothing are recommended as the event can continue overnight. Pets are not allowed on the course.

Recognition

A custom belt buckle is awarded to every runner who reaches 100 miles (24 hours). The winner becomes eligible for entry into the Big's Backyard Ultra world championship, with airfare assistance provided. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
