Sole Survivor Backyard Ultra - Richland, WA (September 12, 2026)

Sole Survivor Backyard Ultra is the seventh annual running of a backyard ultra format held at 1200 Carrier Rd., Richland, WA. The event centers on a repeating trail loop of 4.16667 miles that must be completed within each hour. Runners leave together at the start of each loop and must complete the entire loop before the hour expires; failure to do so results in disqualification. The last runner able to complete a final solo loop becomes the sole finisher while all other entrants are recorded as DNF.

The course begins with a short paved section to thin the field, then continues on mostly flat single track with about 30 to 40 percent shade, a few rocks and roots, and one short steep climb of about 6 to 8 feet vertical. The route is well marked and a map will be available. There is one aid station at the start/finish offering typical aid station fare, hot soup overnight, and ample ice. Crews may remain in the parking area but may not run with or pace entrants or hand items to runners after the bell. Pets are not allowed on course at the same time as runners; service animals are permitted.

The event provides some pop-up canopies and allows camping in assigned spaces. Runners who reach 100 miles (24 hours) will receive a custom belt buckle. The race is affiliated with Big’s Backyard Ultra and the winner may become eligible for championship entry with up to $500 airfare support if entry is granted.
