Sole Survivor Backyard Ultra : Richland, WA

Sole Survivor Backyard Ultra is the seventh annual backyard ultra held at 1200 Carrier Rd., Richland, Washington. The event follows the backyard ultra format inspired by Big’s Backyard Ultra: at the top of every hour runners begin the same 4.16667 mile trail loop and must complete it within the hour. The loop includes a short out and back pavement section to set the distance, then mostly single track with about 30 to 40 percent shaded trail, a few rocks and roots, and one short climb of about 6 to 8 feet. Each loop has roughly 40 feet of elevation gain.

There is a single aid station at the start and finish offering typical aid station fare, plenty of ice, and hot soup for overnight runners including vegan and chicken noodle options. A barbecue may be lit at dusk and participants may bring items to share. Pets are not allowed on the course during running hours; service animals are permitted. Crews and supporters may attend but cannot act as pacers or run the course with participants and are expected to remain in the parking area.

Event rules emphasize starting each loop on time, remaining on course, no late starts, no pacers, and that runners cannot leave the venue between loops. Runners who reach 100 miles (24 hours) will receive a custom belt buckle. The winner may become eligible to enter Big’s Backyard and, if granted entry, the event may provide airfare up to $500.
