Savage Gulf Marathon
The Savage Gulf Marathon is a trail event held at Savage Gulf Park near Coalmont, Tennessee. It is organized by HardWin Adventures in coordination with the Tennessee Park Rangers Association. Proceeds support training scholarships and professional development for State Park Rangers.
The event features multiple race options:
- Marathon (26.2 miles)
- 25K (about 15 miles)
- Ruck 25K with required carried weight
The marathon course runs through rugged terrain on the Cumberland Plateau and includes steep descents and climbs into and out of the Savage Gulf, stream crossings, bluff edges, large stone formations, waterfalls, historic sites, wildflowers, and old growth forest. Organizers describe the route as technical and report that several participants are occasionally pulled from the course for safety. The field is limited to the first 200 registrations. Marathon entrants must have completed a marathon or longer previously; the 25K is open to all participants.
A rucking division is offered with weight requirements based on body weight and enforced via weigh-ins before the race. The weight must be in clearly marked plates or equivalent, and participants may face random checks on course. There is a five hour cut-off at the mile 18 aid station; runners not through that point by the cut-off may be located and escorted to the finish by volunteers.
Packet pickup takes place on race morning at the start location. Final start area and course layout are provided to entrants about one week before the event. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
