Savage Gulf Marathon
The Savage Gulf Marathon is a trail event held at Savage Gulf Park near Coalmont, Tennessee. The event is coordinated by HardWin Adventures and the Tennessee Park Rangers Association. Proceeds support training scholarships and professional development for state park rangers.
The event offers the following distances:
- Marathon, 26.2 miles, prior marathon completion required
- 25K, 15 miles, open entry
- Ruck 25k, rucking division with required pack weight
Organizers warn the course is extremely hard and note that several participants have been removed from the course in past years. The route includes steep descents and climbs into and out of the Savage Gulf on the Cumberland Plateau, rocky and technical terrain, multiple stream crossings, runs along bluff edges, large stone formations, waterfalls, historic sites, wildflowers, and old growth forest. The course layout and the exact starting area are provided to runners a week before the event.
Race entry is limited to the first 200 registrations. Marathon entrants must have completed a marathon or longer previously; the 25K is open to all. The ruck division requires a weighed pack based on body weight with a weigh in before the race. A five hour cutoff is enforced at mile 18; runners not within the cutoff may be escorted to the finish. Packet pickup is held the morning of the event at the start location. Details and race day protocols are provided to registered participants. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
