Event overview

The Savage Gulf Marathon is scheduled for March 28, 2026 at Savage Gulf Park, Coalmont, Tennessee. The event offers the following distances:

  • Marathon - 26.2 miles
  • 25k - 15 miles
  • Ruck 25k - 15 miles

Race entries are limited to the first 200 registrations. Entry fees listed by the organizer are $95 for the marathon and $85 for the 25k. Marathon entrants must have previously completed a marathon or longer; the 25k is open to all. Proceeds support the Tennessee Park Rangers Association and training scholarships for state park rangers.

Course, rules and logistics

The course is rugged and technical, featuring steep descents and climbs into and out of the Savage Gulf, stream crossings, bluff edges, large rock formations, waterfalls, historic sites, wildflowers, and old growth forest. The organizer warns that past years have required pulling several participants from the course and recommends adequate preparation.

A 5 hour cutoff is enforced at mile 18; participants not at that aid station by the cutoff will be located and escorted to the finish by volunteers. The Rucking Division requires weighted packs: over 150 lb carry 20 lb dry weight, under 150 lb carry 10 lb dry weight. Weigh-ins are conducted 30 minutes before the race start. Packet pickup occurs the morning of the event at the start location. Final start area and race layout are provided to registered entrants one week before the race.
