Savage Gulf Marathon
The Savage Gulf Marathon is a trail event held in Savage Gulf State Natural Area near 1183 Stone Door Road, Coalmont, TN. The event is coordinated by HardWin Adventures and the Tennessee Park Rangers Association, with proceeds used for training scholarships for State Park Rangers.
Distances offered:
- Marathon (26.2 miles)
- 25K (15 miles)
- Ruck 25K
The course runs on the Cumberland Plateau and includes steep descents and climbs into and out of the Savage Gulf gorge. Runners will encounter rugged, rocky and technical terrain, stream crossings, bluff-edge running, large stone formations, waterfalls, historic sites, wildflowers and old growth forest. The starting area and full race layout are provided to entrants a week before the race; the 25K includes a new section added to previous years.
Field size and entry rules are specified: the race is limited to the first 200 registrations. Marathon entrants must have previously completed a marathon or longer; the 25K is open to all. All participants receive a participation award; top three male and female finishers receive rewards. Packet pickup occurs the morning of the event at the start location.
A rucking division requires a weighted pack. Weight rules are 20 pounds dry for participants over 150 pounds and 10 pounds dry for participants under 150 pounds; weights must be verifiable type and may be checked. There is a five hour cutoff at mile 18 and participants must follow required COVID and social distancing protocols on race day. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
