The Savage Gulf Marathon is a trail event held in Savage Gulf Park near Coalmont, Tennessee. The course runs through rugged portions of the Savage Gulf-Stone Door trail system and crosses several streams and bluff edges. The route includes steep climbs and descents into and out of the gorge and passes notable scenery such as large stone formations, waterfalls, historic sites, wildflowers, and old growth forest.
Distances offered:
- Marathon (26.2 miles)
- 25K (about 15 miles)
- Ruck 25K with required carried weight
The rucking division requires a weighted pack. Weight rules specify 20 pounds for participants over 150 pounds and 10 pounds for participants under 150 pounds; weights must be stamped and may be checked. There is a five hour cutoff at mile 18; runners who do not reach that aid station within the cutoff will be located and escorted to the finish by volunteers.
The race is coordinated by HardWin Adventures with the Tennessee Park Rangers Association. Entry is limited to the first 200 registrants. Marathon entrants must have completed a marathon or longer previously; the 25K is open to all. Packet pickup is handled on race morning at the start location and the specific start area and course layout are provided to entrants about one week before the event. All participants receive a participation award and the top three men and women receive additional rewards.
Savage Gulf Park is a 14,357 acre State Natural Area with roughly 55 miles of trails, ten primitive campsites, and features such as the Great Stone Door. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
