The Savage Gulf Marathon is a trail running event held at Savage Gulf Park near Coalmont, TN. Distances offered are 26.2 miles (marathon) and 25k (15 miles). The event is coordinated by HardWin Adventures and the Tennessee Park Rangers Association. Race entry is limited to the first 200 registrations. Marathon entrants must have completed a marathon or longer previously; the 25k is open to all. Entry fees listed are $95 for the marathon and $85 for the 25k. Proceeds support training scholarships for State Park Rangers.

Course and logistics

The course follows rugged terrain on the Cumberland Plateau and includes steep descents and climbs into and out of the Savage Gulf, stream crossings, bluff-edge running, rocky sections, and varied scenery such as stone formations, waterfalls, and old growth forest. Organizers describe the route as extremely hard and note that some participants are removed from the course each year. Packet pickup is held the morning of the event at the start location. The exact start area and the full race layout are sent to registered runners one week before the event. All participants receive a participation award; top three male and female finishers receive rewards.

Ruck division and safety

A rucking division is offered. Weight requirements are: over 150 lb carry 20 lb dry weight; under 150 lb carry 10 lb dry weight. Weigh-ins occur 30 minutes before the race start and participants may face random weight checks on course. There is a five hour cut off at mile 18; runners who do not reach that aid station within the cutoff will be located and escorted to the finish.
