A Race for the Ages
A Race for the Ages is a multi-day ultramarathon held at Fred Deadman Park in Manchester, Tennessee. The event utilizes a one-mile loop known as the Deadman Mile, where participants aim to accumulate as many miles as possible. The unique structure of the race provides older participants with more time to compete; runners aged 41 and older are allotted a number of hours equal to their age. Participants aged 40 and younger compete during the final 40 hours of the event.
The course is located within a public park that remains open to the local community for activities such as baseball and tennis. The path circles through the park and sections of the parking lot. On-site facilities include indoor bathrooms located directly on the course, supplemented by portable toilets near the start/finish line and on the back side of the loop.
Participants have several options for lodging and support:
- Ample tent camping is available on-site, with spaces situated near the loop.
- Small campers are permitted in a specific rear parking area, provided they fit within a standard 8.5 by 18-foot parking space.
- Several motels are located within one mile of the park for those seeking off-site accommodations.
Organizers provide hot meals every six hours, featuring catered southern cuisine. These meals are prepackaged for individuals, and additional meal plans can be purchased for crew members. Ice is also available for purchase at an on-site facility. The event emphasizes a community atmosphere where different generations of runners share the course, often resulting in numerous participants logging over 100 miles or 200 miles.
