Saturn 7 Hour Time Challenge - Gilesgate

The Saturn Dun Holm Challenge is a time-restricted running event held along the River Wear in Durham. Participants have 7 hours to complete as many or as few laps as they choose. The course is a flat trail following a scenic stretch of the river, offering views of the local Cathedral. The route is fully signed and does not require navigational experience.

A standard full lap measures 4.37 miles (7 km), though this may be adjusted to a 3.28 mile loop depending on ground conditions. Runners must complete a minimum distance of 3 km to be recognized as an official finisher and receive a themed medal. The event is open to all abilities, including walkers. Specific turn points at 3 km and 5 km are provided to ensure younger participants can comply with distance regulations.

Participants can achieve several benchmark distances during the session:

  • Half Marathon: 3 laps
  • Marathon: 6 laps
  • 50 km: Available distance
  • Ultra: 7 laps or more

The event headquarters at the Durham Amateur Rowing Club provides access to toilets and changing facilities. An aid station is located at the start and finish of each lap, offering a variety of sweet and savoury snacks, including vegan options. Finishers receive a goody bag and are eligible for distance-specific pins if they complete a half marathon or further.

The trail remains open to the public during the event. While a bag drop area is available near the start, it is not staffed or secured. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
