Swainby Sweep
The Swainby Sweep consists of two circular trail races located within the North York Moors National Park. Starting from Swainby Village Hall near Northallerton, the event offers participants a choice between two distances:
- 7 miles
- 16 miles
The routes traverse a variety of landscapes, including the Cleveland Way, moorland, and forest tracks. Participants encounter terrain ranging from exposed and rugged uplands to muddy woodland paths, primarily following bridleways and footpaths with limited sections on minor roads. Notable locations along the course include Cod Beck and Oak Dale Reservoirs, Scarth Wood and Whorlton Moors, and Black Hambleton.
The event provides a marked course supported by marshals, water and feed stations, and regular checkpoints. Medical provision is available on-site. Runners can also access downloadable GPS routes and written route descriptions prior to the event.
Facilities at the race include car parking and a goodie bag for all participants, which contains a race medal. Trophies are awarded to the top three male and female finishers both overall and within specific age groups. Participants must be at least 18 years old to enter. Due to the presence of livestock and governing body regulations, dogs are not permitted on the course. A portion of the entry fee is donated to the North York Moors National Park and Cleveland Mountain Rescue Team. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
