Beyond Newcastle - event overview

Wild Deer Events stages Beyond Newcastle on Saturday 25 April 2026. The event uses a Newcastle city-centre start at the Swing Bridge on the Quayside and returns to the Swing Bridge area for the finish on the Newcastle side. The event base is listed as Guild Hall Car Park, Newcastle upon Tyne.

Participants can choose between the following distances:

  • 55 km Ultra
  • 25 km Trail run

Both routes start at the Swing Bridge, are fully signed and supported, and include marshals and feed stations. The 55 km route follows the River Tyne to Wylam, crosses the Tyne, runs past Derwenthaugh Marina, then follows the River Derwent through High Spen, Chopwell Woods and Lintzford, drops into the Derwent Valley, continues along the Derwent Walk and rejoins the River Tyne before returning to the Swing Bridge finish.

There are three well stocked feed stations on the 55 km route and one on the 25 km route. Runners are expected to carry basic kit such as a running backpack or vest, water or fluids, a charged mobile phone with emergency contacts saved, food or gels, a headtorch if expecting to finish after 4.30pm, and a lightweight jacket. There is a cut off for the event and runners who do not reach the final feed station on the Derwent Walk by 5pm will not be allowed to continue; the overall event cut off is 7.30pm.

Live chip-timing is provided by Timing Up North. All finishers receive an event medal, Wild Deer merchandise, and a snack and drink. An event T-shirt can be purchased for £12 when signing up. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
