Routes and logistics

  • 55 km Ultra
  • 25 km Trail

The 55 km route follows the River Tyne to Wylam, returns along the Tyne to Derwenthaugh Marina, then follows the River Derwent past High Spen into Chopwell Woods and Lintzford, drops into the Derwent Valley, uses the Derwent Walk and rejoins the River Tyne to finish at the Swing Bridge (west path). The 55 km course has three feed stations; the first is near Wylam Car Park (approx. 15 km), and two are on the Derwent Walk (out-and-back points at about 32 km and 44 km).

The 25 km route runs from the Swing Bridge along the Tyne, crosses Scotswood Bridge, loops around Derwent Walk Country Park and returns along the Derwent to meet the Tyne, finishing at the Swing Bridge. The 25 km route has one feed station on the Derwent Walk (approx. 13 km).

Both courses mix paved and unpaved surfaces (about 73% paved / 27% unpaved for the longer route; 74% paved / 26% unpaved for the shorter route). Sports GPS devices and the provided GPX files are recommended. There are enforced cut-off points on the routes at the approximate distances noted above.
