Fell Running in the Quarries
The Quarry Runs are a series of junior fell races held at Penistone Hill near Haworth. These events take place on the old quarry grounds and are known for a fast pace and short circuits. The course designs utilize the natural landscape, featuring a dash along the bottom of the quarry followed by scrambles up steep sections.
The races are organized into specific age categories with varying distances to suit younger participants. The minimum age for entry is 6 years on the day of the race. The primary categories and their respective course lengths include:
- U10 (Under 10): 600m consisting of one small lap.
- U12 and U14: 1600m consisting of one large lap.
- U16 and U18: 2900m consisting of two large laps.
All participants start within the quarry, where they complete an initial sprint before ascending the quarry walls. The longer courses for older age groups transition from the quarry onto the moorland, passing local landmarks such as a pond and a trig point before descending back into the quarry area.
Registration takes place at the Cricket Hut of the West End Cricket Club. Every runner receives a goody bag upon completion of their race. A prize giving ceremony is held at the cricket hut following the events, with awards for the top three finishers in each age category and additional recognition for participants in fancy dress.
