Quarry Runs : Wharfedale Harriers

Quarry Runs is a series of junior fell/cross-country races organised by Wharfedale Harriers around the old quarries at Penistone Hill. Events are scheduled on 18 January 2026, 11 October 2026 and 20 December 2026. Ages are defined as at 31 December 2026 and the 2026 age groups reflect recent FRA rule changes.

The course uses short circuits that start in the quarry, run along the quarry bottom and include a scramble up the quarry edge. Younger runners loop back into the quarry for a short lap; older juniors run one or two larger laps of the moor, passing the pond edge and the trig point before re-entering the quarry. Lap plans by age are:

  • U10 - 600 m
  • U12 / U14 - 1600 m
  • U16 / U18 - 2900 m

There is no separate U20 category; anyone under 18 on the day may run as U18 and be eligible for prizes in that category. Minimum age on the day is six years. The event base is the Cricket Hut at West End Cricket Club, Penistone Hill. Entry cost is £2 and all junior runners receive a goody bag. Junior prizegiving is held at the cricket hut with prizes for the top three in each age category and awards for fancy dress. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
