Puffing Billy Running Festival

The Puffing Billy Running Festival is a multi-day sports event held in the Dandenong Ranges, Victoria. The event centers around the historic Puffing Billy Railway, a century-old steam railway. Participants have the opportunity to run through rolling hills and forest landscapes, with the premier event involving a race against the steam trains.

The festival offers several distances to accommodate various experience levels:

  • 13.5 km Classic (Race from Belgrave to Emerald Lake Park)
  • 5 km Family Fun Run (Held at Emerald Lake Park)
  • 1.2 km Junior Dash (Held at Emerald Lake Park)

The 13.5 km Classic course follows the route from Belgrave to Emerald Lake Park, where runners compete to reach the finish line before two locomotives. The shorter distances, including the 5 km and 1.2 km events, take place within the grounds of Emerald Lake Park.

The event provides electronic timing for all participants. Available services include bag drop facilities, drink stations positioned along the courses, and on-course first aid. Finishers receive a medal and a digital certificate. While the race routes utilize road closures for safety, there is also family entertainment provided at the finish line.

Logistics for the event include a free return bus shuttle back to the start line. Participants may also purchase tickets for an optional return journey on a locomotive. Proceeds from the festival are directed toward heritage restoration projects for the Puffing Billy Railway. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
