Prairie Dairy 5k
The Prairie Dairy 5k is a timed 5K event offering both an on-site trail race and a virtual 5K. The on-site course runs entirely on dirt and mowed grass trail and is described as hilly and rough.
Distances:
- 5K - trail race (run or walk)
- 5K - virtual 5K
The on-site route starts at a working microdairy, passes through about three acres of restored Iowa tallgrass prairie, goes by a farm pond, runs near an Iowa nut growers hazelnut test crop and a native young Christmas tree plot, and finishes back at the dairy barn and arena where music and awards are held. The event includes a prairie identification challenge; finishers who present the provided fauna and flora checklist receive a metal or stickers for kids tickets that feature wildlife native to the prairie.
Snacks are provided to finishers. Cheese may be available for purchase pending county approval for event sales. The event coincides with the first year Connorridge Farms Creamery is selling cheese and notes goals related to supporting local food and restorative prairie practices.
Practical details stated by the organizer include limited parking that requires a hike through prairie, no street parking, a maximum event capacity that counts spectators, event operation rain or shine, and no dogs except service animals. Giveaways and purchases for registrations after 7/14/26 are not guaranteed to be available on race day. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
