Trail Running in Kunanyi

The Potato Hopper, Snake Plains and Ferny Trees event takes place at Fern Tree Park. This event offers three distinct trail distances traversing various landscapes around the Wellington Park area. The terrain includes paths lined with large manferns, historic water supply stonework, and sections of the Pipeline Track.

Participants can choose from three course options:

  • Enduro (Potato Hopper): a 21 km trail with 600 m of elevation gain.
  • Sport (Snake Plains): a 13 km trail with 420 m of elevation gain.
  • Explorer (Ferny Trees): a 4 km trail with 190 m of elevation gain.

The 21 km course features terrain ranging from smooth paths to technical, rocky sections. It passes through Silver Falls and The Springs before entering the Potatofields, an area known for its dolerite boulderfields. This route includes downhill single-track sections on the Wellington Falls Track and finishes on the flat Pipeline Track.

The 13 km option follows the same initial route as the longer distance before turning onto the Snake Plains Track. This section includes traditional bushwalking paths that can be eroded or boggy. It offers views extending toward Bruny and South Cape. The 21 km and 13 km routes utilize Milles Track and both conclude back at the event hub. Facilities at the hub include a BBQ and bib pick-up area. Parking at Fern Tree Park is limited, and public transportation via Metro bus is available.
