Potato Hopper, Snake Plains and Ferny Trees
The Potato Hopper, Snake Plains and Ferny Trees is a trail running event held at Fern Tree Park within the Kunanyi Trail Series in Hobart, Tasmania. The event features three distinct course options that traverse various terrains, including rainforest, historic infrastructure, and rocky mountain tracks.
The event offers three course distances:
- 21 km Enduro course with 600 m elevation gain.
- 13 km Sport course with 420 m elevation gain.
- 4 km Explorer course with 190 m elevation gain.
The 21 km Enduro course, known as the Potato Hopper, begins by passing through large manferns and alongside historic water supply stonework toward Silver Falls and The Springs. The route moves onto the Milles Track, which features technical and rocky terrain, passing the Potatofields dolerite boulderfield. The return journey utilizes the Wellington Falls Track and the Pipeline Track, which consists of downhill single track and flat sections leading back to the event hub.
The 13 km Sport course, titled Snake Plains, follows the same initial path as the longer route before turning onto the Snake Plains Track. This section includes traditional bushwalking track characteristics such as eroded and boggy segments. On clear days, this section provides views extending toward Bruny and South Cape. The 4 km Explorer course, known as Ferny Trees, provides a shorter option within the trail network.
The event hub at Fern Tree Park hosts a barbecue and presentation ceremony. Limited parking is available at the site, and the location is accessible via Metro bus services. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
