Potato Hopper, Snake Plains & Ferny Trees

The event takes place at Fern Tree Park on Sunday 1 November and offers three trail running options. It is part of the Kunanyi Trail Series and is hosted by Trail Ventures, a small family-run Tasmanian business. The organisers acknowledge the Palawa people of Lutruwita as the traditional owners of the land.

Distances:

  • Enduro: Potato Hopper : 21km, 600m elevation
  • Sport: Snake Plains : 13km, 420m elevation
  • Explorer: Ferny Trees : 4km, 190m elevation

The Potato Hopper course starts through big manferns and beside historic water supply stonework, then passes Silver Falls and climbs to The Springs. Early sections of Milles Track include more historic stonework before turning into technical, rocky terrain. Runners pass the Disappearing Tarn and cross the Potatofields, a dolerite boulderfield. The route descends via the Wellington Falls Track to the Pipeline Track, which is described as a runnable single track back to Fern Tree Park.

Snake Plains shares the initial part of Potato Hopper, reaches near the Disappearing Tarn, then turns onto Snake Plains Track. Parts of this track are eroded, boggy, and scratchy, and the route can provide views toward Bruny and, on a good day, down to South Cape.

Event logistics note limited parking at Fern Tree Park. The event includes a run briefing with a Welcome to Country, bib pick-up at the event hub, a BBQ, and presentations with spot prizes. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
