Winter Ultra Challenge in East Lancashire
The Pendle Way In A Day is a waymarked trail event set in the moorlands and trails of the South Pennines. Based in Barley, at the foot of Pendle Hill, the event provides participants with a choice of two routes through the countryside of East Lancashire. The course follows footpaths and bridleways, visiting local villages including Blacko, Barnoldswick via Weets Hill, Earby, Laneshawbridge, Wycoller, Higham, and Newchurch.
Participants can choose from the following distances and categories:
- 45 miles (approx. 72.4 km) with 6100ft of ascent – Runner or Walker
- 30 miles (approx. 48.3 km) with 4500ft of ascent – Runner or Walker
The route is fully waymarked with the Pendle Witch emblem. While markers are present, participants are provided with GPX files and written instructions, as some navigational ability is required. This is a self-supported winter event that includes a climb up Pendle Hill. Due to the weather conditions and the amount of climbing involved, the organizer states the event is not for beginners.
Safety requirements include carrying mandatory kit such as full-body waterproof cover, a map (OS 1:25k), a headtorch with spare batteries, a compass, a whistle, a mug, and a fully charged mobile phone. Fell or trail footwear is required. The event has a final cutoff time of midnight for all participants. Registration takes place in Barley, where parking is situated nearby. Entrants must be at least 18 years old. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
