Midwinter Mortimer Trail

The Midwinter Mortimer Trail is a two-course, self-navigating trail event that follows sections of the Mortimer Trail across the Marches from Ludlow to Kington. The routes pass through mixed trail, fields and road, and cross forests, limestone tops, gentle pastures and a number of villages.

Key landscape features on the courses include the valleys of the rivers Teme, Lugg and Arrow, the Mary Knoll Valley, High Vinnals, Orleton Common, Croft Ambrey and Wapley hill fort. The main route starts at the entrance archway of Ludlow Castle; the shorter course starts at the Riverside Inn in Aymestrey and finishes in Kington.

Age and entry information is specified by the organiser: the 30 mile Ultra requires entrants to be 18 years or older and the Croft 15 requires entrants to be 17 years or older. Entry fees listed for the event are £60 for the 30 mile Ultra and £40 for the Croft Half.

The organiser describes the main course as a no-frills, self-navigating adventure through the Marches landscape. Estimated completion ranges provided by the organiser are roughly 5 to 9 hours running or 8 to 12 hours walking for the longer route, and roughly 2 to 6 hours running or 5 to 8 hours walking for the shorter route. A short pairs race on Haddon Hill in Carding Mill Valley where one runner sprints to the top, tags a partner, and the partner runs back down. Entries are on the day only at £10 per pair and the minimum age is over 12.

Trail races of 10 mile and 5 mile in Aymestrey on 19 July 2026, with a climb to the Iron Age hillfort at Croft Ambrey. Routes are fully marked and marshalled with water stations, on the day entries if capacity and a juniors 2 km race.

A new 10 km trail from Ross on Wye along the River Wye with off road terrain and riverside wildlife. Entry is £14.99 via PayPal, minimum age 15, and all finishers receive a bespoke medal.

A 100 km race on the Beacons Way through the Brecon Beacons with 3,178 m ascent. Self-navigation with map and compass is mandatory and entrants must meet qualifying experience and kit requirements.
