Course, aid and race services
Courses run largely on moderately technical dirt trails and fire roads, using sections of the Western States trail and landmarks such as No Hands Bridge, K2 training hill, and the Dam Hill switchbacks. Hiking or trekking poles are permitted. Courses are marked with colored ribbon and additional signs; blue ribbons mark wrong-way trails.
All races are chip timed using MyLaps and Race Director, with disposable chips attached to the back of each bib. The event is cupless: aid stations will not provide paper cups and runners must carry their own bottle or reusable cup. Aid stations stock a variety of gels, chews, snacks, electrolyte mix, water, and some fresh fruit. Drop bag service is not available. There is a 6.5 hour time limit for the 35K race.
