James River Trail Runs

James River Trail Runs takes place at James River State Park on April 11, 2026. The event uses a roughly 10 mile loop course; runners are credited for a completed loop as a finisher at the corresponding shorter distance.

Distances offered include:

  • 10 mile
  • 50k (three loops)
  • 50 mile (five loops)
  • 50 mile relay

The loop combines varied terrain. The first half is mostly singletrack with some double track, short steep climbs of about a quarter to a half mile followed by descents, and sections with roots and rocks that are described as runnable. The second half runs along the James River on flat, wide trails. Each loop includes about 1025 feet of elevation gain. The route passes Cabin Loop, Taylor Pond Loop, Running Creek Trail, Ridgeline Loop, Branch Trail, Cabell Trail, Dixon Landing Overlook, River Trail and a canoe landing and picnic area before the climb back to the start area.

There are two aid stations: one at the start and one on Cabell Trail around mile 6; the start area aid station offers hot food and typical ultra fare, the Cabell Trail station provides fruit, PB&J, water and Tailwind. Drop bags are not required; runners may keep a bag at the start area accessible each loop. Pacers are permitted under specified rules for the 50k and 50 mile distances. Dogs and strollers are not allowed. A 16 hour cutoff applies to all distances. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
