James River Trail Runs
The event takes place in April at James River State Park. Participants can sign up for a target distance of 10 miles, 50K, or 50 miles. All runners compete on the same roughly 10-mile loop course, completing as many loops as needed for their chosen distance. A unique rule means runners are credited as finishers for any distance they complete: for example, someone registered for the 50-mile who finishes three loops becomes a 50K finisher.
The course is a loop starting near Shelter 1. The first half mixes singletrack and doubletrack trails with short, steep climbs and descents. The second half follows the James River on flat, wide trails. Each loop has 1,025 feet of elevation gain. Aid stations are located at the start/finish area and around mile 6 on Cabell Trail.
A 50-mile relay option is available. Pacers are allowed for the 50K and 50-mile distances on the final loops. The event is not stroller-friendly and does not permit dogs. A 16-hour time limit applies to all participants.
Every runner registered by March 20th receives a trucker hat. All finishers get a ceramic mug. Awards are given to the top three males and females in each distance. Discounts are offered for military, fire, law enforcement, medical, and educational professionals. The 50K is part of the Virginia State Parks Adventure Series.
