James River Trail Runs takes place in Gladstone, VA at James River State Park, near 104 Green Hill Drive. The event is organized as repeated laps on a roughly 10 mile loop and is in its fourth year in 2026.

Distances offered include:

• 10 Miler
• 10 Mile Night Race
• 50K
• 50 Mile Relay
• 50 Mile Solo

The loop includes varied trail types. The first five miles have sustained climbing and descending on single and double track. Around mile six the route parallels the Historic James River for about 3.5 miles that are relatively flat. The final 0.5 mile returns with a steep climb back to the start and finish. Each 10 mile loop has about 1,025 feet of climbing; the full 50 mile totals roughly 5,000 feet of climbing. Full loop details are available from the organizer.

The event uses a loop-based finish system: completing one loop yields a 10 mile time; three loops yield a 50K time; five loops yield a 50 mile finish. A 16 hour cutoff applies to each distance. Runners who drop down are not eligible for top three awards.

The 50K is a bonus points race in the Virginia State Parks Adventure Series. Discounts are available for military, veterans, fire, police, EMS, medical personnel and teachers using the "Thanks" option. Deferrals may be offered for injury or COVID with prior arrangement; refunds are not offered. Groups of five or more (excluding relays) can request a group discount, and referring three friends can qualify a runner to enter for free. Hiker categories are available for the 50K and 10 Miler.
