James River Trail Runs
The event is held at James River State Park in Gladstone, VA (104 Green Hill Drive). It uses a 10 mile loop that combines single and double track trails with climbing and descending. The first 5 miles contain most of the climbing. Around mile 6 the route parallels the Historic James River for about 3.5 miles that are relatively flat; the final 0.5 mile returns with a steep climb to the start/finish. Each 10 mile loop has roughly 1,025 feet of climbing.
Course changes moved the route away from Red Oak Campground and Taylor Pond to a loop around the picnic area near Canoe Landing campground, placing the secondary aid station closer to the halfway point. The full event scoring borrows from fixed time formats: finishing one loop yields a 10 mile time, three loops yields a 50k time, and five loops yields a 50 mile official finish. A 16 hour cutoff applies to each distance. The 50 mile course accumulates about 5,000 feet of climbing.
Additional notes: the 50k is a bonus points race in the Virginia State Park Adventure Series. Hiker options use the same 10 mile and 50k courses as noncompetitive entries while still providing finish times. Gluten free aid station options will be available. Discounts, deferral rules, and group policies are published by the organizer. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
