James River Trail Runs - James River State Park

James River Trail Runs is held in April at James River State Park. The event uses a roughly 10 mile loop as its core format; completing one loop counts as a finisher for that loop distance or any lesser distance entered. There is a 16 hour time limit for all participants.

Distances offered include:

  • 10 mile
  • 50K
  • 50 mile
  • 50K Relay and 50 Mile Relay

The loop mixes mostly singletrack and some double track on the first half, with short steep climbs of about a quarter to half mile followed by descents. The second half runs along the James River on flat, wider trails. Each loop has approximately 1025 feet of elevation gain. The course starts at Shelter 1 near the canoe livery and group campground and follows a sequence of named trails and overlooks, including Ridgeline Loop, Running Creek Trail, Cabell Trail and River Trail.

There are two aid stations: one at the start/finish with hot food and typical ultra provisions, and a limited station on Cabell Trail around mile 6 with fruit, PB&J, water and Tailwind. Drop bags are not necessary; runners may keep a bag at the start/finish for access each loop. Pacers are allowed under specific rules for 50K and 50 mile distances; pacers are not permitted for the 10 mile. Dogs and strollers are not permitted.

Packet pick up takes place at Shelter 1 on Friday evening and on Saturday morning. Registered runners by March 10 receive a trucker hat; finishers receive a ceramic mug. Awards are given to the top three men and top three women in each distance except the hiker category. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
